You guys are missing the cheap and easy to work on part of the equation.

I've notice a lot of that generation's electrical problems come down to the soy based insulation on the wiring. It does break down over time and it is actually edible to rodents. We had squirrels eat our wiring harness twice in 6 months.

Yeah, actually, I wanted to mention, I keep seeing Yaris mentioned here.
My sister has a Yaris.
Have you guys SEEN how cramped the engine bay is? :die
4 cylinders mashed into that tiny compartment, and the slap in the face is that the hood of the car is tiny, too!
I'd estimate the hood to be 1/3 the size of a Metro hood. :shake
I did an oil change and brake pads for her one day while she was at work.
Brakes not a big deal, like any other brakes.
I still can't remember where I had to reach to unscrew the oil filter, though. :hmm

After almost 15 years of turning wrenches there are not many newer cars that have impressed me at all. I got nothing...
:gp

I cannot think of a single engine that is as simple to work on. As for simple to work on, you have to go backwards instead of forward in years, then you get into gas hogs.

Also most of these cars listed are as old as the geo. It's not really a replacement if it's the same age.

The main issue being the words "modern" and "easy to work on/reliable" do not go together in the slightest of ways. In my honest opinion, after the demise of the Chevrolet Prizm in 2002...it's all garbage unless you're looking at a Corolla up until 04. I had the late 2010 Cobalt which was very sluggish and got bad MPG. If you tried to give it an oil change you were so :hump it's unbelieveable. All the car companies are in the same league now, there's no competition to be found.
They might as well do their ads like this now
"The new 2013 Chevrolet Bland, gets 35 mpg from a plastic toy chest that produces enough horsepower to haul half the family dog. Don't worry about interior comfort, we've fashioned it from a solid slab of plastic for you to ease that troubled mind. Love safety? Well we've made our newest model from recycled chewing gum and aluminium foil, all wrapped up in 8 highly costly airbags. We even have something for everyone. The center console is compatible with ALL current iphone models which will be obsolete in 6 months. And for the mechanic in your life, the engine bay is easy to work on by only requiring partial dissasembly of the entire car to work on - Chevy, like a rock made from recycled rocks" :drink

I suppose I'm the only person who likes the Sonic.

No, I'm a big fan of the Sonic. The 1.4T 6 speed manual is perfectly capable of breaking into the 50 MPG club. I've posted several videos & sources of this. I would get at an '01-'02 Chevy Prizm or '95-'02 Saturn SL1 before I bought a Sonic though just for the cost benefit factor.

Dooooon't do it!!!!!! :oshit Idk about the TDI, but my wife had an '02 jetta an it was a nightmare! Headlights/taillights/electronics routinely went out, brakes went out, and at like 120,000 the transmission went, along with some other major thing my memory fails on. It was gonna cost 4k to fix it all an the car was only worth about 3k :x Pretty much the only two positives were she thought it looked cute an the gas milage was great as mentioned before, when it wasn't in a certified VW shop that is, cause that's the only place you can get them fixed. :smackface
Sorry, don't mean to be a downer just Check out the reviews first :news
My experience is that VWs turn into junk around 80K miles. Very cool cars when they're new.
