My theory is that you might need to time it! and reset your ignition timing too! you need a Timing light and a Haynes mechanical book so you can time your geo! |

i got the car home last night after buying it yesterday. Today i started looking it over, I checked all the wiring and it all looked good. when turning it on there was no check engine light and no way to get it to show any codes. checked the bulb and it was good. I turned on the key and jumped the fuel pump solenoid and the pump came on and started dumping fuel through the injector. The injector was just on 100%. So I pulled out the computer and it didn't smell good. One of the traces burnt in two. I jumped the burnt trace while cranking the car and it started for a second and died. the traces on the board that are brown and burnt are power and ground. So something internal in it is shorted out. I will look at it tonight and see if i can fix it but it looks like the computer is dead. tomorrow I will check the sensors and see if something killed the computer or it just went bad. either way it is probably going to need a new computer |

have you had the back seat out lately, or had a 300 pounder in the back seat. pull the back seat out and look @ the connector for the fuel pump. use you test light, this is for Geogokart... |

geogokart sold the car to me yesterday. I have it at my house now trying to sort out what happened to the ecu. It has a burned out trace on the circuit board that goes to the black/green ground wire. The trace on the circuit board going to the white main power is also showing signs of passing too much current and the green coating on it is burned and blistered. I fixed the burnt trace on the board now the check engine light will light up but it still does not turn on the fuel pump or respond in any useful way. I am suspecting the Zener diode D402 is bad since it looks like the traces between it, power, and ground are the ones that are passing too much current. I don't see it available anywhere and if it failed and pushed 12V to circuits only made for 2.5v then it probably blew half the stuff in the ecu. So it looks like it needs a new ecu and there isn't much that can be done to fix the old one. I will start testing all the sensors and anything else that hooks to the ecu tomorrow and see if there is something shorted out that caused the ecu to die or if it just went bad. |

Man, GeoGoKart, this is not the ending I was hoping for. I'm glad the car stayed in the family, but I really wanted it to work out for you. |

Without a working ecu I can't get the car started so I started looking over everything else that it needed. I ended up replacing both headlights, tail light bulbs, license plate lights, marker lights, and another bulb here and there to get all the lights working. Since so many bulbs are burned out and the ecu is fried I am kind of thinking the alternator is putting out too much voltage and burning everything up. I can't do much to check it until I get it started so I won't know if that is the cause of the problems until later on this week when I get the ecu for it. But an alternator putting out something crazy like 20 volts would cause all the problems I have seen on the car. I will not have much time to mess with it this week but I would pretty much say the voltage regulator on the alternator is bad and putting out too much voltage and that is what burned up the ecu and most likely what caused the coil he replaced a few weeks ago to go bad. |

Take the alt to autozone and have it bench tested? |

I had a bit of time to mess with it today so I had a buddy start it while I poured gas down the tb to keep it running, still no ecu yet. I had a voltmeter on the battery and it was showing 17V at idle and it would go up if it was revved up. The rate it was going up I bet I could get 50V on the system at like 4000rpm. So I swapped alternators and checked it again and got a nice 14v when revved up. So it looks like the actual problem with this car was the alternator was just cranking out the volts and burning up everything in the car. That is probably why it burned out the coil and the computer. I will hopefully get another ecu on it this weekend and it should be just about ready for the road. I just have a few more bulbs to track down to get it all back running. Those little tiny bulbs in the switches are really hard to find. |

Did it boil the battery dry? |

the car has a new battery on it now. I suppose it boiled the old battery and killed it is why he put a new one on there. |

To finish up this problem, I finally got a working ECU in the car and it now runs again. So to summarize, alternator went bad from the coolant line directly over top of it getting a leak and keeping it soaked. Alternator went full field and put out huge voltage of 20+ volts. Burned out 90% of the bulbs in the car including the entire dash and park lights. Boiled out the battery(PO replaced), burned out the coil(PO replaced) and finally burned out the ECU. So in total I put a new alt on it, new ECU, new bulbs, new passenger inner tie rod, new left tail light harness from melted sockets, and new passenger front marker socket. Now the car is ready for the road again. I drove it about 50 miles today to make sure everything is good and it looks like it is ready to drive finally. |

I also had similar problems and it turned our to be the fuel injector.I found out by luck as I almost replaced the fuel pump as well... |
