Does anyone know what all cars I should look for in the junkyard to find a gauge cluster with tachometer from the factory that would fit in my Metro? Obviously, a 3 cylinder Metro would be ideal, but I understand tachometers for those are hard to come by. I am also under the impression that the XFI never came with a tachometer, but is still able to accommodate one if one is found and modified(?). I have searched through the forums here a bit using Google, but didn't find any sort of list showing which 4 cylinder Geos/Chevys/Suzukis would work in a 3 cylinder XFI Metro. I also found this thread here detailing how to adjust the tachometer to work for a 3 cylinder. ---> http://geometroforum.com/topic/4909536/1/ If such a list does not exist and you know of a car that would fit the bill, would you list it here for me? Thanks! |

http://geometroforum.com/topic/3946668/1/ What: Instrument Cluster with Tachometer & Tripometer For: '92-'01 Metro/Swift Donor Vehicle: '92-'01 Metro/Swift & '96-'98 Tracker/Sidekick/X90 Modification required: None. Although it may be beneficial to pull the speedo cable from the donor car as it is a little longer & double check the "idiot" lights, since the features of each car may be different. Example: Rear Defrost, etc. Also, be sure if your Metro is a 3 cylinder, you are pulling the cluster from a 3 cylinder & vice versa for a 4 cylinder. Also be aware some may only have 5 digits for the odometer, rather than 6. '89-'91 instrument clusters are shaped differently & will not work for the '92+ Metros. Some Metros/Swifts have a tripometer, but no tachometer as well if you want a simpler way of keeping track of mileage. You can use a 4 cylinder tachometer in a 3 cylinder, but you need to convert a 4cyl tachometer to 3cyl. Why: Able to see engine RPM & track mileage easier by using the tripometer, rather than doing math at each fillup

Ok, can somebody answer this question? First off, my car currently has a no tach cluster. It's a 1992 3cyl 5spd with 145/80-12 tires. I'm hoping to get 13 inch wheels and 175/70-13 tires with them and am looking for a gauge cluster with tach. I know with 13 inch tires, I need the white 17 tooth speedo drive gear from a car that had 13 inch tires from the factory in order to keep the speedo accurate. I'm under the impression that I'll need the speedo cable from the car with tach because the shorter one in my car currently may not fit easily. I know about the resistor change to adjust tach. I know about the aftermarket lug nuts needed to keep the 13 inch wheels with 12 mm lug holes tight against the drums/rotors. I also read somewhere on here that the speedo cable from automatic transmissions fits in the manual, but not vice versa. Question: Is the 5spd transmission in the 4 cylinder similar enough that the speedo cable and speedo drive gear will fit in the 3 cylinder transmission? I'm aware that a 3 cylinder stick shift car with tachometer and 13 inch wheels would be the best car to pull parts from, but I doubt I'll find one of those. Also, if there are any assumptions/implications that I have stated here that are wrong, please correct them. I have been getting some mixed information here. Again, thanks a ton to everybody that has given me information! I just want to get it done right the first time. Research on here is free, mistakes are expensive. Hopefully some day I can help out a fellow Metro owner when they need some information that I know. *If this is pushing the limit on being unrelated to this section, please let me know where to ask. Thanks! |

The 13" speedo gear is actually brown. The 12" gear is white. |

Ok, thanks for the input. I suppose color is not really important, as I can count the teeth on the gear. I was getting mixed up by both these links. http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=643429&t=4757087 http://metroxfi.com/2008/04/metro-transmission-and-speedometer-gear-ratio-information/ |

no counting required , you have white gear and need a brown one . good luck in finding one ,they are worth the effort . |

If you find a 4 cylinder Geo Metro with a 5 speed transmission, you most likely have found your 16 tooth, brown speedometer drive gear, except for the 1995 in Row 1 at the St. Louis Pick-n-Pull. I already snagged that one. Those are called Geo Metro Convertibles. If you find one of those, you will find your speedometer with tach, and a 16 tooth, brown speedometer gear. You will want to remove the airbag light. Also, the seat belt light won't work quite right. Pull out that light, also. So far, so good . . . Up through 1992, odometers had 5 digits. After 99,999 miles, you get a free, new car . . . ![]() 1993 and after odometers have 6 digit odometers. It's much harder to get a replay. JellyBeanDriver might be the first . . . Oh, and speaking of JellyBeanDriver . . . he's the guy who does the tachometer conversion from 4 cylinder to 3 cylinder, and the guy who has the MPGuinos, and he's looking for a cool hat . . . No worries. Some members start a project thread. Project threads are easy to follow. Some members start a new Topic for every question in the section that applies to the system in question. Some members hang around in the lounge and talk about everything else . . . Someone will get you answered, one way or another. |

Close but not entirely. The Convertible came with 13" wheels, but they had low profile tires that were the same diameter as the 12" cars. The speedo drive gear is going to be the same as any other 89-94 Metro. |

Wow, I didn't realize where you were located! My brother goes to school at SIU-Edwardsville and has been checking out the Metros in Speedway Salvage just a few miles east of the Mississippi. I think he said he tried calling the St. Louis Pick-n-Pull and never got anyone to answer. How many metros are in there?
So now I'm confused. How many teeth need to be on the drive gear for a car with 175/70-13 tires? Edited by jherman93, Oct 12 2012, 09:41 AM.

Got 70 MPG?

The speedo cable from a 4 cylinder is shorter since the transmission sits a little more over to the drivers side. The cable would probably work, but it would be extremely tight. New 3 cylinder speedometer cables can be bought off rockauto.com. I do not know if they have different lengths available for the tachometer models though. |

Brown gear. 16 teeth. Mythstae had a 17 tooth white gear installed. Her tire size is 175/70R13. She was greeted by a Utah State Highway Patrol Officer as she was driving along at 77 MPH indicated (75 MPH Posted Speed Limit). She got a warning for going 84 MPH. Now that a brown 16 tooth speedometer gear is installed, the speedometer indicates the correct speed. |
