http://www.ramtrucks.com/en/2013/reveals/ram_1500/ I would never buy this truck, too many untrucklike things about it. But I think it fits the current 'truck' market perfectly.... 25mpg (gas) highway is really impressive. Edited by Coche Blanco, Oct 15 2012, 02:55 PM.

bought a '72 Dodge new-- heavy 1/2 ton, 318, granny 4 speed, high speed rear end. carried a large camper on it for 15 years then hauled wood etc for another 15 years. 230,000 miles when I sold it. no major engine, tranny or rear end repairs. matter of fact I never even changed oil in the tranny or rear end. body kinda rusted around everything else but when I sold it in 2002 it was still running good. dont know about the newer ones. Grandfather bought a 318 Automatic Ram 1500 2wd back in 98... it has since survived my father, my sister, and myself..... 14 years and still going strong and will still tow, haul, everything like new.... few break problems with the rotors but i blame asbestos free pads and cheep rotor metal for that. just put on a new water pump and need to put a heater core in it and it will be good for some more years of use ![]() 20 MPG highway recorded by myself with no major hypermileing just driving like you got some sense. |

the 318 and the slant six were the best mopar engines. not it terms of performance but in longevity. the cummins motor is ok to. IMO as far as diesel truck motors go the duramax will last longest, but you will have injector problems. |

I've driven Rams for my job for years (low bid). All 4x4's, all worked hard off-road. The first one I got back around '98 was great. It was a half ton and I used it for several years and many miles. Each one I had since was a 3/4 ton - and - all made in Mexico. All were absolute dog sh*t. The fenders rattled off the first one, the bed cracked apart and the transmission had to be fixed multiple times. The first time they fixed it they said "who worked on this" I said no-one it's brand new. "It's missing parts". Tells you about the Mexican quality control. When I got a chance I got a ford and my only complaint is no interior compartments - not even an ash tray. But it has 70K on it and no problems. Again, worked hard off-road. |

Put either a 318 or a Slant in front of a Torqueflite and you had a powertrain that would not die. But the new Cummins motors ain't what they used to be because now they are designed from the start to be pickup motors. Back in the late 1980s, Dodge was getting their asses handed to them by Ford and GM in the truck market. It was partly because their competition offered really strong diesel engines that would pull a house off it's foundations, and Mother Chrysler didn't have any available diesels in the Rams. GM had their own 6.2 and 6.5 diesels, and Ford was running International 6.9 and 7.3 diesels. Biggest engine you could get in an '88 Dodge was a gasoline 360 (that's 5.9 liters for you red commie metric types). Chrysler needed a diesel, and they found one with the Cummins. But the 6B Cummins was NOT a light truck engine...it was an engine that had up until then been used in heavy trucks and machinery. So it was radically overdesigned and overbuilt for use in a 3/4 ton pickup truck. That is why they lasted so long and had so few problems. Even over 200,000 miles of hard use in a pickup, the engine was barely breaking a sweat given what it was designed for. Chrysler had literally put a bulldozer engine in a pickup truck! The new diesel motors...from Ford, GM, or Chrysler...are designed for pickups. Smogged-out, EPA-muzzled, hippie-engineered pickups. And they suck. If somebody offered me a new '13 Ram I would take it. Then I'd sell it and find a nice '89-'02 Ram Cummins.

I grew up with my mother's 82 dodge van, awesome vehicle, and when it died, it made someone a great storage shed. New dodges? If I had the choice between the vehicle you linked too brand new, or my geo in its current condition? I'd save myself the money and stick to the geo. Maybe I could hall slightly more in the long run with the truck, but hell, more then once I've towed and hauled in a geo, so... Its not the size of the dog in the fight, its the size of the fight in the dog! That being said, having A/C is sometimes a wonderful thing.... Edited by Oden, Dec 8 2012, 02:59 AM.
