So the wife and I went on vacation a week ago and we made a pit stop along the way. Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro, Alabama: Link--->Unclaimed Baggage Center A little bit of background. If you leave something on an airplane, a bus, a train, or your luggage is lost it ends up here. Middle of nowhere Alabama. I know. ![]() But if you are willing to dig you can find some really good stuff there. I will tell you, it is MUCH closer to a thrift store than to a Wal-Mart. You have to go there with this state of mind. The wife and I usually make to trip up there about twice a year. This year it was on the way to a cabin in Gatlinburg. I usually spend around $100 when I go. I had been saving for a while so this time I spent $250. ![]() $100 bought the wife A perfect condition Samsung Galaxy S2 And $50 bought me An Apple magic mouse A 60 GB SSD Drive new, sealed in the box A copy of The Legend Of Zelda Twilight Princess for Gamecube A blackberry presenter new, sealed in the box A memory card copier A memory card reader A WiFi hotspot A small external hard drive And..... $200 bought me A PANASONIC TOUGHBOOK CF-30!!! ![]() I have wanted one of these for a very long time. Over $4000 new, so I didn't think I was ever going to get one I could use. I LOVE this thing. ![]() Only 2,000 hrs on it. (This is basically new for a Toughbook) If you don't know what a Toughbook is: And this bad boy is loaded! Touchscreen, Bluetooth, Backlit keyboard Etc. And a TRUE 5 hour battery! Ok it is a little slow (1.66Ghz Intel Low Voltage Core Duo processor), but for what this thing can go through.. ![]() I got lucky and they were just putting it out as I walked up. Of course it did cut into the vacation $$. ![]() The Unclaimed Baggage Center is not for everyone. If they know what it is, it tends to be overpriced. But if they don't know what they have.... Some people make a special trip just to come to the Unclaimed Baggage Center. I myself would not travel more than a couple of hours to get there, but if you are traveling near by, stop off and take a look. Be prepared to dig!

That's a HELLUVA deal. Awesome. Unclaimed Baggage I can stand and deal with...if they can't get the original owner with reasonable effort, there's not much else to do but sell it. what pisses me off to no end is the warehouses of goods TSA rips from people's baggage at checkpoints .... then they turn it around and sell it

Been there once. I was completely underwhelmed. I'm glad you liked it! Have you ever been to Dirt Cheap? Edited by Coche Blanco, Oct 16 2012, 08:56 AM.

Wow, with reasonable effort... This seems very wrong, but if the owner doesnt care, and is too lazy to label their belongings, it makes sense to try and turn it back into cash. |

I'd heard of the Scottsdale location and saw the it featured on tv back in the 1990s. I've since heard of a similar location closer to me in Maryland where TSA auctions off the stuff they confiscate (ie. a steel barrel filled with used nail clippers, another with used shaving kits, another filled with pocket knives and chinese throwing stars and such, and yet another with stuff like toy guns and questionable looking things.) Never had a chance to swing by that area either. |

I love Dirt Cheap! There are two in Tuscaloosa. The one on Skyland is nice and organized. The one on University....not so much. The one on University, no lie, seems to pile EVERYTHING in a big pile in the middle of the store and you have to literally dig for stuff. But their prices are even cheaper because of it. Bought a brand new in the box LG Env3 there for $10. At the time it was a $200 phone. Also got a nice Columbia jacket for $10 too. For those of you that do not know, Hudson's Dirt Cheap is a salvage company that operates retail stores. Lets say a store like Wal-Mart catches fire and is considered a total loss by the Insurance company. (Fun fact: Wal-Mart is so large, they are there own Insurance company, just a different division. )Not everything is destroyed. Hudson's Dirt Cheap goes in a buys whats left, and sorts out the good stuff (or just the slightly damaged) and sells it CHEAP!
