Considering manual trans rebuild - what do I need?; Have second geat synchro issues - sometimes 3rd pops out on bumps.

I am considering rebuilding a manual transmission. It has trouble downshifting to second like many Metros so that synchro is bad. It sometimes pops out of third if I have it under load and hit a bump. This is rare and has maybe happened twice but figure I need to do a rebuild.

I have found kits on eBay that include bearings, synchros, and seals for like $150. Is there anything else I need to do the job myself? How about sealing up the transmission case after I a done? Is black RTV all I need for that? How about tools? Do gears ever need replacing?

I also have a perfectly good automatic trans from a 1993 1.0L that I pulled with a good motor from a car with rusted frame horns. I used the motor in my car but would consider trading this automatic for a good manual. It has around 88k miles on it and the fluid looked nice and red with no burnt smell. I would consider trading this along with the torque converter and flex plate/flywheel for a good manual transmission and flywheel setup.

Thanks,

Conor

I wanted to add that I have another manual with the second gear synchro problem I could also use for parts if needed during the rebuild.

As for the auto I have, the engine had been well cared for so I would assume the same for the trans.

Definitely looks like something I could handle. What do you think about what I might need? It looks like one of the kits and a few basic tools are about all I would need.

If I come across a good used manual transmission to simply replace mine, what years do the manuals interchange? I have a 1994 car and wanto to know if I can use an older or newer unit without any problems? Also, are there any years where the transmissions seemed to be better or worse than others? Did they improve anything as the years went or go to cheaping out on something?

Thanks,

Conor

The eBay kit is just fine. It doesn't include the shift shaft boot.

Popping out of 3rd gear is a gear problem. Gears are not in the rebuild kit. They are still available from GM or Suzuki for around $200 per gear set.

I know a guy in Kansas City that will install your parts for $200. He'll put a 30 day warranty on the ticket. $200 for 50+ years of experience working on transmissions gets my $$ every time. I've had several in there for repair.

Check the engagement teeth of both the 1/2 and 3/4 gears and sliders. The wear in pairs. If its missing more than about 25% of the engagement teeth replace the slider and the gear on the worn side. What happens to one, happens to the other, except backwards. It will stay locked up with that much wear. But you will be back in it very soon.

All the same, 89 - 01. There are differences in gear ratio according to engine and year. Four cylinders got a bigger differential and a different mounting point on the case for the shifter support rod, you need to make sure your replacement transmission has the needed mounting spot:

The newer cars came with both mounts in the case, no matter what was inside or what engine was bolted up.

I stole it from TeamSwift, and I think it was a guy from Redline GTI who posted it there, so it's from down under.
