Well for about a month now I've been noticing a roaring noise from the rear of the metro. Asked my son which side he thought the sound was coming from, and he said the drivers side. I jacked up the rear end and spun the tires and sure enough, the drivers side bearing was growling. Now comes the fun part. I've had these hubs off so many times that I could do a bearing change almost blindfolded. I didn't time how long it took, but I know it was not even fifteen minutes from the time I started jacking up the car until it was back down on the ground. It was very easy to beat the bearing out, pack the new bearing and insert it. Very easy and the best part about our rear bearings is that we don't need a press to get them out or put them in. Just a hammer and a 8" socket extension. I made a bearing seat(er) using a 2x4 and a round disc I cut out of a 2x4. After two wacks the bearing was set. Fifteen minutes for a bearing replacement, man, I'm good.

Nope. It took me too many previous tries to figure out what I was doing, and I'm not about to share now!!! Just kidding. No, I did not do a write up or pics. I was a one man show and the wife was naked in the shower so she couldn't help hold a video camera. But, at least I have my priorties in order. I got the metro fixed!! Woot, woot. There are plenty of write up in the break/bearing section. Just do a search and something will pop up. I've just done it so many times, its like second nature. The tool I build for setting the bearing was very helpful. In the past I would have to use a hammer and a 30mm socket to set the bearings. That usually took a long time to peck away at the bearing. Very frustrating so I am going to keep my bearing setter handy for when the other side goes out or when I replace the seal on the wife's passanger side c/v axle. It's got a huge leak .

actually if you would have held the camera while your wife was naked in the shower and wrote about that, would have been nice Edited by 2000Firefly1.3L, Oct 16 2012, 08:37 PM.

Come on guys, cut me some slack. You really think I could traipse into the bathroom while covered in axle grease and film my wife covertly? I would probable walk out of the bathroom with a black eye and a camera nestled in a sensitive body cavity. Ouch. Anyway, it was fun to accomplish this task quickly. Usually while working on the metro I slave away for hours on simple tasks----rebuilding the head, swapping out trannies, or repairing interior stuff. Ugh. |
