I was out in the shop trying to get as much done on the hoist as I could before our house sale closing date on the 25th of this month. Man, I am going to miss that hoist! Anyway, I thought I would throw a set of KYB's on the front end and maybe do an alignment. As I was buttoning everything up after the installation of the KYB's, I scanned the area as I learned to do while working on race cars, and saw this on the left rotor:

Ever since we got the car and I freed up the front brakes and put in new pads, there has been a "funny" feel to the brakes; something I could just barely detect with my hands, foot, and ears. My wife didn't notice anything. At the time I just figured it was because I cheaped out on the brakes and didn't replace the rotors even though they had quite a bit of rust... in my experience the rust would just go away after using the brakes enough. I figured the "funny" feel would go away as the rust went away. It never did.

Apparently when the pads were dragging for the previous owner, they overheated and cracked the rotor. BAD owner!

As we become more accustomed to the way our cars should feel and look and smell, we are better able to spot little problems before they become big problems. Scan around your work area and be safe out there.... ^o)

Nice catch, Dave. You are now an official member of the "Evil Inspectors from Hell". :evillol

However, I would not recommend that you replace it. Geo Metro owners are, by nature, cheap bass turds.

You risk being ostracized by replacing it.

It will be just fine for a long time if you just stop drill the crack, and turn it down on the lathe.

(Just kidding, of course.) ;)

Yeah ummmm, what he said.

I agree with you so strongly. Having driven oval track, race karts and road racing cars you develop a feel for when something changes or is amiss. It is not unusual to see people driving totally oblivious to a flat tire or some obvious mechanical defect, even a door that is only on the first latch.

If I have a tire that is down 5psi it is detectable very quickly. Small changes in gauge needle positions just seem to jump out at you.

Good catch on the rotor. :thumb

Why you Mutt!

Fortunately, even though us Geo owners are cheap-assed turds, the rotors themselves are cheap, thanks to the Miracle of China. So you can replace the rotor, and maintain your cheap status!

I called around the nearest big town (Janesville, WI - pop. 64,000) and was amazed to find that O'Reilly's had the rotors in stock! When I tried to take off the cracked rotor first, I found that another cheap-assed turd had worked on it before me; he bought a rotor without the 8mm threaded removal holes! :banghead I spent the last 1-1/2 hours of my life attacking the rotor with various implements of destruction, trying to get it off the rusted hub.... Since we had moved most of our stuff over to the the other house already, my flame wrench was gone; I ended up standing there with a little piss-ant propane torch until the rotor started smoking. Some full swings with a sledge hammer broke off the disk portion of the rotor and I was able to bang the rotor hub off the wheel hub. Very medieval, but strangely satisfying.

Yuck! What scares me most about these types of posts is that I'm pretty sure my turn is coming...
