Wanted to start up this thread and see what you folks thought? I am curious. I know that the VX is a lean burn engine, would that benefit over a metro anywhere other than the highway? Thanks for the info.

Vx would more than likely get better MPG overall on both roads.

Thanks for chiming in CB. From what I've been reading, the tuner crowd has raped most of these, and it's hard to find a nice unmolested stock VX. Wouldn't hurt to add one of these to the car stable.

So. Tech wise, what scenario would each of these get its optimal mileage in?

What are you basing that answer on?

VX has lean burn. It gets amazing fuel mileage once lean burn is activated. The only MPG battle a metro will win is in the city due to its light weight.

I still love my metro, but I'm gonna keep my eye out for a 92-95 stock civic VX...

The only benefit, that I can see, is more power when you need it.

I have 2 friends that both have VX's. When I tell them that I got 42mpg on my race Geo, they promptly reply that they "saw" 68+mpg on their last run to the Twin Citys. About 150 miles. They stare at their Guinos continually. And use every hypermile tactic at their disposal.

I, for one, only count Full Tank mpg's. No Guino. Just drive, fill, and see where you're at.

If we swapped cars, they would get much better with mine, and I would do much worse with theirs.

Would be interesting to do that test. :hmm I bet it would be a wash. :news

Tell them to get back with me once they get 70.19mpg on a 697.24 mile tank ;)

The EPA says no contest:

VX 48/55
XFI 53/58

The EPA says a lot of things....

If it weren't for lean burn, it would be no contest.

EDIT: And if you don't drive using lean burn the results would be about what the EPA says.

MPG is only one part of the equation -
overall vehicle cost
vehicle availability
parts cost
parts availability
ease of repair

on strict MPG & HP comparisons, the VX has a strong potential for winning out in a number of scenarios. But when the entire vehicle experience is monetized, it would take a VERY long time for any MPG savings to justify the additional cost :thumb

When I was looking for a car I would've taken a nice VX if I could find one although at some point I decided that Metros were where it's at - can't remember why exactly. There are a few to be had out there on CL but they are rarer than the Metros for sure. Also, as I understand it the CA cars don't have the lean burn enabled due to smog issues so watch out for those.
