First question isnt the easiest to ask. Sometimes its hard to describe certain sounds. You know that........howling sound some pickups make on the highway (mostly because of large lug tires)? Well my geo makes that noise (not as loud) on the highway and especialy freeway and gets louder on right hand turns but isnt so noticeable on left hand turns, these can be short or long turns. I rotated the tires so I know its not the tires. Could it be bearings? Struts? Idk...

Second question is when I'm shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Sometimes it slides right in, sometimes it takes a couple tries. Its not as difficult as 3rd to 2nd (I'm sure thats synchros) but it is getting more and more annoying. I realize the gears are close together, so I hope its just my lack of geo 5sp driving exp.

The noise sounds like bearings if you can turn car one way getting body roll to reduce weight on side its making noise and it stops is a clue its bearing related to me

Can also jack front end up and with wheel still on grab it at 12o'clock position and 6 and shake to see if there's play in front end like wheel bearing etc and 9 and 3 position. If anythings loose ft end wise you will get a good shake from wheel
