You CAN recharge a "non-rechargeable" battery with other batteries. I have no idea what the picture is though. |

Its an antenna for war driving. Who suspect a aa battery, coin battery and screws on a board as being an antenna?

Well, some of the guesses were close. It is indeed a charger for "non-rechargeable" alkaline batteries. The project: http://www.lightweightmiata.com/projects/batterycharger/ First test (before and after): |

The verdict on problems charging the watch batteries? Still needs further testing. I've got one cooking now and will look at it after 24 hours. The batteries were 8 years old and completely dead. That is probably the limiting factor. Verdict on the ability to charge an alkaline? Looks good. The AA battery pics speak for themselves. I should have made it easy to swap resistors out to change the mA charge intensity. I'm doing a very small trickle now so I think charge times will be pretty long. I didn't want to create any heat and risk blowing up the batteries. |

Problem with charging alkalines is they tend to leak, also don't have as much capacity but still useable amount. Zinc will also form dendrites that can grow through the separator causing cell shorts. Lithium coin cells - don't know much about recharging those. I know lithium ion has a tight recharge voltage range - outside of that and you can turn your pack into a nice smoking blowtorch. |

Doesn't really matter much to me. I was more interested in the project vs actually saving money or getting a perfect charge. Edited by rmcelwee, Oct 23 2012, 02:28 AM.

When I was a kid I had a LCD watch (pretty sure it was one of these super expensive ones - click on the link to see something amazing) with a dead battery. I taped it to the end of a long wooden fireplace match and stuck it into a bug zapper. I pulled it out after a few seconds and the battery worked just fine. I think the watch was still working fine when I lost it a couple of years later. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CASIO-G-SHOCK-VINTAGE-DW-5000C-1B-THE-FIRST-GOLD-SERIES-CIRCA-04-1983-RARITY-/261090962733?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item3cca3bed2d |
