Auto tranny shifting question; Doesn't seem to be ever shifting?

I've never paid attention to it before, possibly because I don't mind at all how slow the car is, but I never feel the tranny shift after 5mph, as if it starts driving in 1st, shifts into 3rd at 5mph, and just stays in 3rd forever. No matter how hard I push the gas at any speed, it never shifts down, just keeps trucking in the same gear until a full stop.

Am I just not sensitive enough to the ever smooth gear changes? Is there a problem?

As a side note, could the missing shift control solenoid be causing this? The tranny had difficulty leaving P when I purchased the car, so I just disconnected the solenoid, worked like a charm...

Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, and hopefully it's not just caused by the solenoid :smackface ...

removing the shift control solenoid on an automatic is just like removing the shift lever on a manual.---kinda hard to shift without one

Sounds like you need to do an adjustment to your shift cable to me. There are two small nuts at the end of the cable near the radiator. Remove the end one and then make sure your tranny is fully in Park by hand. Pull the lever the cable goes through, all the way towards the front of the car. Then make your adjustment... loosen the rear nut (of the two) and then thread it back up till it makes contact on back of the lever, then replace and tighten the front nut. Test drive and repeat if necessary.

I had to mess with mine a bit, as the cable was disconnected from the tranny when I purchased the car, so that the owner could move the car forward and backwards by hand (not running) under his car port.

adjusting the shift cable is useless if he (as he indicates) has disconected the "shift control solenoid"

Adjustment after reinstalling said solenoid. Unless the difficulty shifting from park is related to something internal and not a manual adjustment fix.I misread as difficulty shifting into park or staying in park.

I think he's talking about the shift interlock solenoid in the shifter.

I'm talking about the solenoid that is removable from the inside of the car, under the center console. Yeah, after running "shift interlock solenoid" through Google, that is what I disconnected. Sorry for the confusion.

Should I just try to adjust that shift cable, then?
