I think it depends on the mood of the officer. I have HEARD, that state troopers will GENERALLY not pull someone over for going up to 9 over. Possibly not worth the effort, and/or waiting for the guy in the Corvette going 15-20 over.

However it goes... if we are outside the posted parameters, and get stopped, we really can't complain.

And you believed him?
It is not true that you are allowed to go 5mph over the limit without fear of getting a ticket. That is total bunk.
Same goes with driving slower than the posted limit.
These are the kind of myths that should not be spread. Too many people will believe them.

You can driver slower than the posted speed limit...

And there it is. It depends on the officer. Thanks 94RHDRollerskate. They know the the law. They also know what will fly in court. Not every speedo is accurate. The cops know this. This is why they "turn the other cheek" and let people "speed" by.
I have been pulled over for going a few mph over the limit. Cop asked me if I knew how fast I was going. Told him 40mph. He then told me I was going 44. He then asked if I had different size tires on the car. Well, I did. Nice cop. We talked for a bit. In the end he let me go with only a verbal warning.
Fact is, you, the driver, are responsible to know the actual speed of the car you are driving.

Mr Mojo Risin'

To make it clear to some people, I understand I was speeding (no big shock there). I'm just upset I got a $200 ticket for going 10 over AND that the guy was a bit of a dick. He coulda been nice and joked like I was doing but nope...just an emotionless a hole who railed against my aging geo
Iamgeo you should change your nametag to negativenancy jk :lol
Maybe the cop was in a bad mood but it just gets to me that its $200 for 10 over. Thats $20 per mile an hour :ermm:

I did not say that you can not go slower than the posted limit.
If you read it again you will see I stated "without fear of getting a ticket".
Also you will see that I posted the actual code in another post.

We go through this when lifting our Jeeps. Part of the process is to recal the speedo, or change out the speedo gear. One may get lucky playing the "I didn't know it was off" excuse.

And Aaron, I agree that $200 seems pretty steep for 10 over.

IMO the police should spend 90% on real crimes and 10% on traffic violations.
