Anyone ever been to a turkey shoot?

I see Virginia has a number of them. Looks like fun.

This is the wiki description:
A "turkey shoot" is also a shooting contest where frozen turkeys are awarded as prizes. The shoot is most commonly held, using shotguns aimed at paper targets about 25-35 yards away. Original turkey shoots, however, dating at least to the time of James Fenimore Cooper, were contests in which live turkeys were tied down in a pen and shot from 25-35 yards.[1] If the turkey died, the shooter received it as a prize. This gave rise to the military term (see below). Another contest provided a caged turkey with a protective wall. Above the cage was a slot in which the turkey could raise its head. Single shot rifles were used and if the shooter was skilled and fast enough, the turkey was shot in the head rewarding the shooter it as his prize. Today, turkey shoots are still popular in rural America. The winner is chosen according to which target has a shot closest to its center cross-mark. This removes almost all luck from the contest, and allows every shooter an equal chance.

Here's a description of local one.

FRIDAY: #9 meat rounds.
1" BBLs only, scopes allowed.
Tickets $3 ea or 2/$5
Optional $1 side pot. $5 every 5th round per ticket.

SATURDAY: Wagner 9 green. Money rounds.
1 - 1/4" BBLs, scopes allowed.
Ticket $5 each, maximum of 4 per individual.

Alcohol allowed but no coolers allowed in the
building. If you get out of control you will be asked
to leave.

yes, they do them at a local indoor range here. you shoot at a target at 15 feet and whoever scores highest gets a turkey. your choice of gun. i was thinking of bringing my .22 rifle to do it, but i never did. i could get all 10 shots in the dead center with that thing.

What's wrong about winning a frozen turkey in a marksmanship contest shooting a paper target?

Okay, I admit, it's harmful to trees.

:P

They used to it alot around here. Maybe 8 t0 10 shooters, shoot at a paper target with a big "X" on it. Closest pellet to the center of the X wins. They used digital calipers to measure with. More of a fun thing, but like anything else I think a few folks got wagering some big side bets. Good fundraiser and if you got lucky you got a turkey. I would play if I could find one.

We have Bacon shoots at my local gun club, which I have done a couple times. It's a great time to meet up with old friends, meet some new ones, and typically involves buying tickets for rounds of shooting trap. The winner gets a big side of smoked bacon!

How can you go wrong with bacon?! Mmmmmm.... baaaacon....
