Hi, all. I know, I know...I still need to post pics. I WILL eventually get around to it . I hadn't planned on posting anything again until I had done that, BUT necessity has prevailed:SUBBIE IS DOWN....SUBBIE IS DOWN! I looked all over this website and couldn't find a diagram for the water pump and surrounding area. Can someone direct me to where I would find instructions/pics to replace the water pump on a 92 xfi? A few weeks after we bought the car, it starting squealing loudly right at startup and then would stop moments later and the car would run fine. After a few weeks of that scenario, one day started up the same way and drove off to work. While driving suddenly there was a metallic rattling sound in the engine compartment. After a while stopped, but returned on commute home and was idling really rough. After husband got home, he looked under the hood and the waterpump appeared wobbly to him so we are thinking that is is the issue? Any input? Husband is a very hands-on guy he just isn't familiar with this car and we have no manual. |

I wonder if you have multiple problems at once. It sounds like a loose water pump pulley or bad waterpump and a loose belt for sure. You can always tension the belt a little tighter to avoid the startup screeching. This is done by tensioning/moving the alternator. Rough running shouldn't be caused by a bad waterpump unless the engine is OVERHEATING! Do not let that happen. I wonder if something happened with the timing belt such as the tensioner or something else is loose in the engine bay. Either way, replacing the waterpump isn't a big deal on these cars. I suggest checking the timing belt and would replace it if it were my car as you have to remove it to do the waterpump. This is a pretty easy job. All I do it put a board between a jack and the oil pan. You then remove the two bolts holding the engine bracket to the mount on the passenger side of the car. You can then lift and lower the engine accordingly using the jack as you need to get to the various parts on that side of the engine. This would also be a good time to replace the cam and crank timing seals if they are leaking or you just feel like getting new ones. Is the waterpump/alternator belt shredding? Conor |

Thanks to both of you . The pics were helpful, blue rhino. cwatkin, we like your system for lifting the engine. All the belts look good and it wasn't overheating, but now that my husband has had a chance to take a closer look, he and his brother says it's definitely the waterpump. It's totally flipping around in there The timing belt is supposedly only 25k old, does it make sense to do it anyway? Some may recall that we paid 4k for this car with supposedly 62k miles and had questioned if we did the right thing. Based on significant research at the time, I believed we did. Now, after 2 months of driving it and only averaging abt 40 mpg, we have had to put tires on all the way aroud (the tread was good, but they were badly weather checked and a band broke) that we hadn't planned on and now the water pump. The good news is that we are nearly rust free and not seeing any more rust than any other car we see in this area. In addition we met up with a another guy who has a white xfi like ours and he said with the condition it is in, it very well could be only 62k original miles....I know need pics. So, did we still do OK |

Yes, do waterpump, timing belt, and cam and crankshaft seals all at once. $4,000 is high but that's already done, no point in worrying about it. Any car is going to need things repaired, if you're spending less than $300 a month you're beating what a new car would be costing you. |

Was down to the minute on time and only able to do the water pump w/o all the other recos. Noticed the radiator was really low on water and the infamous "oil and water separator' had a good deal of oily, watery yuck in it- was dry when we bought it. The timing belt was definitely replaced 2 years and around 20k ago because it was written on the interior of the hood. Engine looks really clean and we can't find ANY rust anywhere. It does look like someone went 4-wheeling in a gravel pit at some point though, because there is dirty gravel sitting on top of the frame in various places. Anyway, started it up and it was AWFUL and Subbie is still down. This thread here sounds like it could hold some clues. Husband is really irritated. $20 a day in gas until it's running.... http://geometroforum.com/topic/4892586/ |

re check your timing belt timing. common error to miss timing by one tooth. Here is an excellent thread to follow: read it all the way thru first. http://geometroforum.com/topic/2232748/1 Edited by Old Man, Oct 29 2012, 04:55 PM.

Thanks so much. Hubby appreciated the directive and asked me to copy off some of it. Won't be able to work on it until Friday. I hope we get it right this next time. |

We finally got the water pump/ timing belt thing dealt with over the weekend. My husband was able to take Subbie to work yesterday and today, but it appears we now have a new problem. I figured I would need to start a new thread about that. thanks so much to those who helped us
