i'm on call 24/7 as an emergency responder on the municipal sewer system so i'm used to getting out of bed at 2 am to go handle some situation. last night i got that call for a fuel spill. what radio dispatch didn't tell me was that the emergency for a diesel fuel spill from a highway accident involved fatalities. when contaminants go down the drain, so to speak, they have to end up somewhere. when it involves a stormwater sewer, they empty, untreated, from an outfall by some ditch, stream, or river. a semi truck lost it in a rain storm on interstate 70 heading east from columbus and hit a sign pole in a way that just shredded the cab. the truck ricochetted to the other side of the 3 lanes and landed on the concrete wall of a bridge structure, suspended over a creek. both fuel saddle tanks got crushed and the diesel fuel poured into a stormwater inlet and consequently, into the creek below. we had to find the open pipe end down on the creek bank to block it off and in the process found the mutilated corpses of the truck driver and his female passenger, ejected from the cab as it disintegrated and thrown onto the creek bank. when i got home there was no way i was going to get to sleep so tried doing some things to keep my mind off the accident. eventually, i drifted off in my chair in front of the computer for a few hours. now i'm all out of whack and i'm still generally freaked out about last night. i think i've been traumatized. |

When I was 14, I watched a guy on a street bike get decapitated on a guard rail. At the time, my parents sent me to a counselor that specialized in death/trauma. While it did help me get over what was etched in my brain, to this day I still get a flash now and then about it, just doesn't bother me as bad now I guess. Most employers now will pay for you to see a counselor when something like that happens. It seemed mostly a 50/50 shot in my experience. |

If it lasts much longer I recommend one of those PTSD councellors...emergency responders deal with that but they expect it as part of their job. When you encounter it suddenly I cannot even imagine. PTSD is hammerimg a LOT of veterans today...Vietnam was not the only hell hole to produce traumatized vets.

Talk about it--family, counselors, doctors, friends, whatever--talk about it. It will probably never go away but talking will make it easier. |

Like others have said, talk to your people at work. they might already have a program set up. Nothing "Weak" about asking for help. It is a smart thing to do. Take care. Your friends are with you....... |

Gonna keep you in my thoughts, man. I know exactly what you are going through. I've been there. Best advise I can give you is to try not to dwell on it, but when it get's to bothering you, talk about it to whoever will listen just like you are doing. Talking it out is the best medicine.
