Prime an Engine?; engine sitting without starting

I have a 93 Metro LSI that has been sitting without starting for about 3 years. It ran fine the last time I drove it but it was simply too small for my family. I would like to get it running again but was advised that it should be primed with oil before I start it. Is this true? If so, is there any way that I can do this without taking it to a mechanic?

Thanks!

Not really anyway to prime these engines without turning the engine over. If it was me, I would pull the valve cover off, pour oil all over the cam/lifters, pull the coil wire and turn the engine over with the starter for about ten seconds. Then fire her up. It will be fine.

Got 70 MPG?

Drain all the old oil out first, then pull the valve cover off and fill it back up by drenching the head in oil.

may want to crank with the fuel pump relay or ignition coil fuse removed.

Remove all 3 spark plugs and turn the motor over using the starter. You will be shocked at how fast it will spin over. After the oil pressure is good, turn over the motor with the starter a little longer, and it will circulate all the oil.

Also when you have the spark plugs out, squirt some oil into the spark plug hole too lubricate the piston's and rings.

Thanks for the help on this... I'll be working on it soon. (hopefully this weekend if my back issue irons itself out) How do I know which oil to select? The manual for the car was stolen years ago (along with the car but the car was found) lol!
