Hey guys, I have a weird problem. My lifters just keep getting sticky and then start to click. Ive rebuilt them 3 times on this geo but they just keep needing to be rebuilt. I got a new set at pick an pull today and I'm wondering if theres something special I should assemble them with so that this isnt a problem anymore. Ideas? |

what did it look like was causing them to 'stick' when you pulled them apart last time? have you tried MMO and/or Seafoam? when you had the valve cover off last time did you check out the oil system holes that you could get at to see what was inside them? Edited by Old Man, Oct 28 2012, 01:00 AM.

they looked fine, no debres or discoloration. I can just pop them out, use vice grips to pull them apart, soak in seafoam, wipe off soak again, wipe off, soak in mmo, reassemble (still wet with mmo but not filled with it) install. the holes looked clear, and when engine is running theres plenty of oil in the top end. EDIT: I got a new set today and they all move much easier than mine straight out of the car. I dont think I'm going to diassemble these before I install them. I remember reading in a thread on this forum that a problem oil pump will cause lifters to under-fill or over-fill depending on oil pressure. I'll have to find it again. |

don't think that would apply in his case. his lifters are going down. One that you are referring to is where the valve in the pump hangs up and the lifters are pumped up too much. I think? anyway, this the link? http://geometroforum.com/topic/4593450/1/ Edited by Old Man, Oct 28 2012, 02:16 AM.

The 5w20 might just be a bit thin. Try moving to 5w30 or 5w40 like i have. |

agreed. 20 viscosity is recommended to be used in newer honda engines. my neighbor's honda odessy uses 5W-20 . suzuki's like ours should always stick to 30 . remember that the second number in the oil rating is its kinematic viscosity at 100* C and the 20 rating is far too 'thin' of an oil for these engines. You could have a weak oil pump? After I rebuilt my engine and put in a new oil pump, the lifters were really quiet. |

Switched to thicker oil and the problem seems to have sorted itself. Lifters are quiet and engine is idling a little smoother. |
