cv seals cause new leak in tranny?; CV seal

Hello all I have a question for the massess.

I just had my 96 1.0 5sp worked on. I took the car in because of the left CV joint. Car was clicking on right hand turns so i fugured that it needed at the least a new CV joint on the left side. shop inspected the car and determined i needed a new Axle left and a new seal right side. had them do the job. pick up the car and its leaking. take the car back to have them look at it and they tell me that the leak is from the tranny input shaft.

they are claiming that because their is a new seal on the axle that that is causing the leak at the tranny input shaft.

is there any validity to this?

this was also determined with a flash light. nothing was taken apart to determine the cause.

Thanks in advance,

I'm no expert but ive replaced a few cv joints and a new seal has never given me a tranny leak.

Complete bull. Replacing one seal can not make another leak unless there is some deeper problem or they screwed with the second seal. Unless the mechanic personally loves these cars, they will do a bad job, over charge you, and not stand behind their work. Besides for the mechanics I've seen on this forum, the vast majority treat these cars as disposable trash. The money you paid them could have bought you all the tools you would ever need to do all the work yourself.

Likely the transmission was low on lubrication when he replaced the cv seal. He filled it back up and it started leaking at that location, if that is what is indeed the leak is. Was already leaking there probably and only when he filled the trans back up did it become noticeable.

It probably is leaking because of the replacement CV.
Many of the remanufactured ones are out of round and do not fit in the seal.
Have the shop measure the shaft.

Scoobs has a great thread on how to rebuild one.
It doesn't take long and works well.
Did the shop give you your old CV?
(some shops will give the cust the old parts)
or did they keep it for the core cost?

you always replace the seal with the cv axle so they should have replaced the left axle and left seal. i have replaced many cv axles and i haven't seen a seal start leaking until you take the cv axle out, so i see no reason why they replaced the seal on the opposite side except to get extra labor time.

if it is a leak from the transmission input shaft you will see it leaking out of the transmission housing at a small hole at the bottom of the transmission. maybe someone else can post up a picture of it, it's the one you jam a screwdriver into to stop the flywheel from turning when you are taking off the crank nut. if the oil isn't coming from there then they are full of bull.

what is most likely leaking is the old seal that the new cv axle is in. when you take the shaft out and put the new one in it tears up the old seal, which is much harder and more plasticy than a new soft rubbery seal. since it's all hard and crappy when the new shaft slides in it won't seal as well and almost always leaks.

i'd do the job for you if you were close...

Its not the axle seal that is leaking now.

100% verify, yourself, that the new axle seal isn't leaking. Shop tried to tell me my trans was cracked (see thread)

http://geometroforum.com/topic/4974397/1/

Come to find out, the reman axles I put in were out of round on the journal, to the tune of 2.5mm. I highly suggest you get the car on some ramps, wipe it all down, and then wipe some more, and keep looking for the leak. You might be surprised where it ends up coming from.

I know the shop I took it to for seal replacement (because I thought I had screwed up the install and messed seals up) was very surprised to see the leaks when I took it back a week later. They were very skeptical at first and swore the case was cracked, until I pointed out the direct line of oil streaming from the seal.

The axles I initially put in were remanufactured. I'll never do a reman axle assembly again.
