Replace ALL valves or simply exhaust valves?; Rebuilding G10 head soon and wanted to check.

I am going to rebuild a G10 head from an engine with burned valves for use in one that appears to have weak valves due to the prior owner severely retarding the timing. The distributor timing was almost as retarded as it could get when I got the engine.

Should I replace intake valves as well as exhaust valves? I know the exaust side is where the problem usually is but wanted to check and see if I should just do them all that the same time. They are not expensive so why not unless there is simply no reason to do so?

I assume I will need other parts such as new head gasket, exhaust gasket, head bolts, valve seals, etc. Do people usually change valve guides too? How about springs?

Thanks,

Conor

well, cwatkin.. if i was 100miles in the woods, i'll just replace the valve in question, but since i assume you're not, have the head rebuilt complete, you won't go wrong..

Me, I would first clean and inspect to the best of my abality. When in doubt, throw is out...
If you are doing your own heads, you will have to lap the new valves anyway, and leak test those also, so why not practice on the old ones...
If you have any wiggle-wiggle in the guides then get new valves with the new guides...

I am probably not far behind you with a rebuild in my future also...

Yes, all new polished valves with the bronze guides. No regrets.

Gotcha! None of the parts are very expensive. I agree that I will replace everything I can to do the head right. Why go to all the work and do it halfway?

So, new head bolts, head gasket, valves, valve guides, valve seals, and ???. What else did I forget? Do you get new springs or not? I have seen many suggest simply cleaning the lifters while others suggest all new ones. What is the best way to go on that?
