These things scare me. I had something similar installed on a Toyota Camrey years back and it was immediately removed after I ran over one of the many pieces of truck tires on the freeway. Guess who's oil was all over the freeway, ... Good thing my idiot light came on and I saw it. Nothing like a 4 mile walk for oil and a REAL drain plug on your way to work in the morning. |

If you hit something hard enough to knock this thing off, you've got major damage...major major damage. |

On mine, .. no damage what so ever, ... it just opened up the valve. It was one of those Autozone specials. It was one of those that looked like a ball valve, similar to the one in the link. I was told by others, there is one that is threaded like a garden hose attachment, unscrew it a few turns and it's open, ... those would be better in my opinion. To open it, ... it needs to be intentional and not by accident. Edited by Bill CNC, Oct 31 2012, 06:40 PM.

Ohhhhh, that changes things. These are really hard to open accidentally, and you can use a little hose clamp to make it impossible, if you dare. |

Yep, I have an F106 on my Metro as well. These don't open easily. They're spring loaded to keep them closed. If this opens by accident from hitting something on the road, then whatever hit it also probably destroyed the oil pan and a few other things under the car as well. |

Why put one of those on, it only takes two seconds to grab a wrench!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a waste of time, and money to spend on those. |

I could maybe see that it's a waste of money, but do explain how it is a waste of time. |

Well if you hit something for one there goes your oil pan, and second of all like I said it takes two seconds to find a wrench! |

It's more convenient for me to flip the lever and let the oil drain than to get under there and wrench the old bolt off and possibly skin a knuckle or two. As we've said plenty of times, this valve doesn't hang down on this application. If you knock this valve off or knock it open, then you've damaged MUCH more than just the valve. Whatever you hit that would be able to do this would mess shit up with or without the valve... |

Also never have to replace the drain plug or seal. No danger of stripping the hex or the threads on the plug or pan. Easy, easy to do an oil change without even raising the car to get under to undo the plug. No oil dripping down your arm undoing the plug or need to wipe off the plug, your hands and the wrench. Never have to fish the drain plug out of the dirty hot oil when you drop it in there cuz you burned your fingers in the hot oil. Saves way more time than just the getting the wrench time. For those of us that have to do 6 oil changes per year it makes lots of sense. For those of you who like doing it the slow messy, drippy, frustrating, stripped drainplug, leaky gasket way, have at it. Edited by clarkdw, Nov 1 2012, 12:42 PM.
