Hello i have a 1997 Geo Metro 1.0, 3clynder engine 5 speed manual transmission My metro i have been driving for a while now but about 5 weeks ago i started to experience problems problem 1 : when i would go to shift into 5th gear i could not engage into that gear it will not move into to 5th or neutral to 5th like the shift stick will not move into that direction. Problem 2 : when im able to actually get it into 5th gear its hard to press in and grinds Problem 3 : when im in 5th gear and i get up to 55 to 65 MPH it will pop out of 5th gear into the neutral position and then i cant shift back into 5th gear must slow down and go into 4th on the highway the rest of the time driving ive never had to deal with a manual tranny before so i dont know how to diagnose it ive heard many different things of what it could be shift linkage syncros are worn shift fork is worn tooth on gear broke off or torn pressure plate please could sombody give me a rundown of the possible problem i dont have the money to put it into a shop to be looked at or fixed also if you would know a website of a place that sells manual trannys for geo metros your feedback will be much appreciated thanks |

Either shift linkage or engine mounts. The countersunk screws that hold the far left side bearings in place are known to come loose, this is directly at fifth gear, under the black hat. |

Have you checked/changed the fluid level in the transmission? Mine had sat for six years, after getting it back on the highway, it did not want to shift after the first few days. Drained out some (low!) black goo and filled it with some 5w-20 (that was all I had on hand, then drove 20 miles to the store), refilled it with some 30HD to see if would keep going and have been happy for 4000 miles. |

Have you change the transmission fluid yet? $20 and 20 minutes to put 2.5 qts of Pennzoil Synchromesh in it ![]() What did you find in the fluid? (metal shavings?) While it's drained, look under the black hat on the driver's end of the transmission. Oh....that will take a bit longer ![]() Let us know
