I have a 98 metro 1.0 liter 5 speed. About a year ago it started stalling on me driving down the road when you let off the gas. It won't restart unless you turn the key to the off position and then restart it. If you gassed it from a standing start all the way to 80 it wouldn't stall, only when you eased off the gas. It was very sporadic and I continued to drive it hoping it wouldn't get worse. It kind of took spells. It wouldn't do it for a while and then it would. I wasn't sure if I was losing spark or fuel. I thought it was a vacuum problem and replaced all of the smaller vacuum lines which all looked okay and checked the condition of the rest and they looked good. I should also add that it tended to do it after you had driven a few miles. Today it quit on me and wouldn't restart, I called a friend to pull me home and had him bring a can of starting fluid. It would run on the starting fluid but still wouldn't start so I think it's in the fuel system. I put a fuel pump on it this afternoon and it started right up but I didn't get a mile from the house before it died on me. It did restart but I had to keep it revved to get home just like before. If you let off the gas it would die.

I have a 96 metro that I bought with 100,000 miles on it and have driven another 130,000 with just basic maintenance. The 98 described above had 112,000 miles on it when I bought it and now has 163,000. I have done 2 valve jobs on it, put in a set of rings, had an electrical relay problem I couldn't figure out and paid 350 to get repaired and now this. I fixed all the rust on this car and put a nice paint job on it a year and a half ago and that's why I don't want to give up on it yet but I am getting close.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. PO

Did you blow out the lines when you were replacing the fuel pump?
Sounds like a clogged return line to me...

Take the lines off the throttle body and off of the tank and use an air comprosser to push air through them. I did not have this problem but I was suprised at how 'clogged' the return line was...

As far as I know it's never been changed , I am not sure where it is . But if the fuel filter was plugged I wouldn't think it would run so good while you were gassing it. Am going out to blow out the return as Maddog suggested and will try to locate it and check it also. Thanks for the reply. PO

Want to follow up with results and say thanks. I blew out the return as maddog suggested and it came out clean other than a couple small pieces of grit. And bypassed the fuel filter for a test. I also increased the idle a little as it was a little on the low side. It ran fine and had no stalls. Parts store didn't have fuel filter and I had blown thru mine with little resistance so I reconnected the old one. Still ran fine. I backed the idle back off and still ran fine. This was an intermittent problem so am not sure if fixed or just in remission but I tried hard to make it stall and couldn't so am keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks again for the help it is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!! PO
