Good Job!

Folks, look where he is at for the rust issue! Nonexistent in the Sacramento are. If the vehicle came from out of state then the vehicle would have a California Emissions import sticker on it as it wouldn't comply with State emissions. But, as he said it had a current smog certificate.

Yes, a tow yard can sell a vehicle if they have followed the state guidelines for impounds. Usually, the owner is contacted via registered mail and asked to pay the impound fees and the storage fees. Depending on the infraction (why the car is there) it can be a minimum 30 day hold. This will turn into a $500-$1000 bill fairly quickly. Before you guys get all upset about the fees, they are established by the state and not the yard. The fees that the yard can impose are paperwork related. In our state, the car must be offered at auction unless the PO gives the title in lieu of fees and both parties agree to drop any liabilities. It is still a great way to get a $10 Metro or Swift!

$1000 for an auction / tow yard car? Depends on condition and reason for tow (abandoned).

Pics can be found on Page 1 of the thread. I'm going to sand it down, then primer it black this weekend. I'll probably just keep it primered black, or spray it with black, then clear coat. Anything is better than the lime and lemon color scheme that it has.

do they get crazy at high speeds? The motor seems like it's ok, from listening to other engines on youtube, it sounds about the same, and shakes the same. Can these motors run for 6 hours straight without any issues? I don't mind doing maintenance and upgrades, but I do mind being stranded on the 5 freeway in the middle of nowhere.
I drive my '96 on long road trips down the 5, regularly. They'll cruise all day and all night.

The key with THAT car (tow yard lien sale, 183k on the clock) and for a guy like yourself, commuting, and 900mile round trips to LA once/month, is to plan on spending a couple weekends and spending another $600 on the preventative maintenance. More if it needs tires and shocks, which I will tell you, improve the highway road manners of these little cars IMMENSELY. But to be honest, you'd have to spend that on ANY inexpensive car that you planned to commute and do LA to Sac road trips in.

To be honest, $1000 sounds ok to me, as long as it drives and doesn't have any major concerns.

First thing I strongly urge you to do is to check the frame horns. If they are good, and don't flex oddly when you or have someone wriggle the car, they should be good enough to at least repair. Seems some people have been ripping people off by throwing a half ass weld job on it so that it last long enough to get off the lot.
While your under the car looking at those horns, take a gander around for any obviouse oil leaks, and also look at the brake and fuel lines which are on the drivers side. These tend to go bad too.
As for the engine, honestly it all depends on the previouse owner. Where they a devoted car owner and kept up on the maintainence, or did they just keep the thing running and nothing more? At 180k miles, I would still suspect that there will be some slight demands of this car. Water pump, alternator, timeing belt, so forth and so on.

However other than that, I don't think there would be anything to really worry about. Just as long as you keep up on the oil changes. :drivin
