Intake resonator tests; how does it function?

I noticed that a good bit of noise in the car under accel is the intake resonator in the fender, So, curious, I read what I could and found little.
The test I did today is a hill on the old highway; the car just holds and accels a tad in fourth. I disconnected the flex connector from the fender piece so the intake flex pointed towards the front. On a second run immediately after, it would not hold 51 in fourth. The intake noise almost went away.
Reconnecting, it held speed and ran OK. So, it seems the resonator does perform some benefit at full throttle (this is also with an advanced XFI grind cam etc.).

I am still considering opening the resonator to the front grill more so it gets more pressure at speed. My main desire here is highway hill-climb ability; I noticed that since the rebuild with the new cam it is a bit slower on the 6% interstate grade.
Nitrous or propane might work too... hmmmm, maybe headers.

At cruise there is no noise and probably no benefit to modifying the intake, other than a warm air port to the exhaust for MPG, which I have one off of a Spectrum ready to test...

Keeping the resonator versus going with a heated air intake (K&N) has been discussed previously.
I'd not seen any statistics on speeds in higher gears.
