Is Mobile Advanced Syn 0-40w ok in our 3 bangers or is the 40w too much? Wally's has it at 6.99 a quart.

I have ran it past year and 30k miles in mine since after the rebuild and that's driving across the country and back few times. Only thing I will run in the Scout.

It is VERY good oil, possibly the best available. One member here claims it's the only thing you should ever use, I think he's a little bit over the top. Numerically speaking, it's too thick for our cars, but from what I've read it's not really as thick as it's rated. The EPA banned something (maybe zinc?) from the latest oils that was wonderfully good for your engine but not so much for the atmosphere. There is a special exception for 0W-40 because of a specific couple of European cars which demand it. Mobile One came up with a mix between 30 and 40, close enough to 40 to get away with, just to meet this specification. So you get the goodness of the secret ingredient in an oil which is a little but thick, but supposedly acts just like like a 5W-30 after a couple of thousand miles.

so is Mobile Advanced the only 0-40w brand to use if going with 40w for our Metros? Otherwise stay with 0-30 or 5-30 synthetic?

Yes, pretty much.

too thick, the 40W means kinematic viscosity at 100* F ... pay attention to labels

while on the surface , this is correct
actual testing by Blackstone labs shows
Mobil One 0w40 tests as 5w/30 after 5k miles in 1.8 liter Audi

so yes
in general never use 10w40 of any type in any geo metro -

the Mobil One 0w40 is very close to the top of the list of oils to be used in Geo Metros
because of the
ACEA A3 B3 A4 B4 specification

this exceeds the minimum specifications for the mandated oil
By General (government) motors
dexos1

study and learn in the BITOG forums european section

so you have to drive 5K miles in a thicker oil before it 'downgrades' to 5W30... harpooning fuel economy... mucking things up inside.
german engines are too different to japanese engines saying this oil converts itself to a different engine in european car, just doesn't correlate to our function scientifically [/quote]

the benefits of the ACEA A3 A4 B3 B4 oil outweighs the low quality of the oem asian oils
but
in any event

the Current Minimum specification for the Geo metros is
dexos1
which is
ACEA A1 B1 A5 B5 a specification which exceeds the oem asian oils but is a lesser value when compared to

Mobil one 0w40
having said that
i can find no measurable difference between castrol GC 0w30 and Mobil one 0w40 with regard to Fuel economy in my G10 engine
so i know the lifters are not pumping up past closed position

and i will state
the Mobil one 0w40 does not "muck up" G10 engines and in fact due to the high values for deposit control of the ACEA A3 B3 A3 B4 oils
reduces and helps to eliminate deposits that the
low quality oem asian oils cause

bottom line
never use low quality oem asian oils in G10 or G13 engines
never use an oil of lesser specification than dexos1 in G10 or G13 engines

do not be afraid to use Mobil one 0w40 or any oil that meets or exceeds
ACEA A3 B3 A3 B4 specification in your G10 or G13 engine -
with the following exception
i have never used the 5w40 castrol oils that meet this and would not unless there were no other quality oils available

Mobil one 0w40 and Castrol GC 0w30 are probably the two best choices
partly because they are readily available from many sources across the USA and frequently go on sale at Autojoke and UNadvanced auto .

the VW specification 504 / 507 LL03 oil is better and readily available at VW Audi
retail
about $11.00 per liter but it has a 10k service interval

never use dogshnit bargain oils from any where
never use royal purple oils as they are UNrated and have no test specification .
or any other alleged synthetics that have no ratings or test specifications on the package

Just a little addition to this, I actually ran 80w-90 gear lube in my 3 banger cause of a harsh knocking noise from inside the engine for well over 15,000 miles. Never had any problems with it, even in the winter.
Found out the knocking noise was a thrust washer turning into a thrusted peice of foil, but the super thick oil helped calm the banging into a light ticking.
