Yes I'm thinking that you are right. I'd rather freeze trying to fix it than break down on I20 outside of downtown Atlanta. The car takes me to the capital twice a week (and back). I live out in the country so the city is not where I want to be stuck.

There are a lot of Metros here for sale on Craigslist for $1500 and up. Every now and then I check (don't know why).

If the belt breaks it will only take a few minutes for it to overheat with no water pump turning.

yeah doing anything of that sort usually gets you nowhere....if its already mostly shredded then chances are itll end up sticking you anyway.

I did it this morning and IT WORKED!!! Thanks so much, guys. I hope I didn't bend anything using a crowbar to push the alt and tighten the belt. It sure was nice to hear the engine purr without the squeaky belt. I think I'll keep a little of this grease on my arms just to look tough.
