which way should the head gasket face to be correct position ?

On the passenger side of the block, very near where the timing belt normally runs, you will find a small hole with a brass looking thingy in it, most have a flat screwdriver slot in them. That's the passage which the oil takes on its way up to the cam. There is only one such hole in the head gasket.

Got 70 MPG?

It will be very apparent if you put the gasket on wrong. It and the mating surfaces are asymetrical.
