I did it this morning and IT WORKED!!! Thanks so much, guys. I hope I didn't bend anything using a crowbar to push the alt and tighten the belt. It sure was nice to hear the engine purr without the squeaky belt. I think I'll keep a little of this grease on my arms just to look tough. The reason I parked the car for so long is the wheel bearing roars when I turn the wheel to the right and it's gotten so bad it's almost unbearable. So while I'm under there with the new belt project I see all the grease falling out. That bearing is shot. So is it out of the question that I might change that puppy out....a similar attempt on a trailer wheel did not go well for me years ago (I didn't know about the little saw bit trick, though) |

A garage quoted me $140 to do it (and I don't have\won't have the money until January). |

you will probably need a press to do a front wheel bearing. if you dont have access to one you could just pull the spindle and take it to a shop who can press a bearing in and out for you.

Good idea. That may be the cheapest way to fix it and maybe they'll just charge me $20 or so. |

I was told the bearing is about $35. Another shop tried to fix it years ago but they changed the wrong side.

Although I don't have a 2000 year model service manual ( or car ) to speak of, from experience on a multitude of other vehicles of various manufacturers, no bearing press should be necessary, or was necessary, to replace front wheel bearings. Front wheel drive axles though are a different animal altogether. If, for any reason ,you find yourself needing to replace a front drive axle due to bearing noise, it's cheaper to buy re-manufactured axles, rather than rebuild them yourself. Rear axle bearings on a rear wheel drive car,on the other hand,a bearing press is mandatory. Front wheel drive bearing service is a do it yourself in the drive way project, and should be no problem. If in doubt, refer to the on line service manuals. Better yet, snag a factory service manual that applies to your year vintage Metro that pops up for sale on E-bay. You can usually score one of them for about $30'ish dollars. Money well spent to avoid getting ripped off from shops telling you that you need to have new bearings pressed off/ on. Spindle bearings are a do-it-yourself driveway project. Drive axles, not so much, but, hey, that's what this forum's about. |

If a vehicle has pressed-in wheel bearings, then a press is required to replaced them. Front wheel bearings on these cars are not what I would consider a driveway job - axles, on the other hand, couldn't be easier. I changed both of mine in about 15 minutes. Not sure what you're talking about here. ![]() To the OP - if you're seeing grease everywhere, sounds like it might be a CV boot torn. Are you sure it's the bearing that's leaking grease everywhere? I had a really noisy axle on my car that just howled when I turned. |

You should not see grease leaking from a bearing, but if it is humming or constantly grinding and changes pitch when curving, then it's bad. If the noise is a "click click click" when taking off and worse when turning, then the axle needs replaced instead. If it's just a bad axle, then you can do this in a few hours (newbie time) and about 60-70 bucks for the axle. |
