Question: How many miles is too much? How many miles do you guys think this one can live for?
IMHO, it really does not matter with these cars. Metros are so cheap and easy to work on, the only thing you need to check for is rust and wrecks. Anything else can be fixed! ;)

You might purchase a Carfax or whatever to help determine the miles.
30 days, unlimited checks $44.99 at link below. As others have stated tho, mileage is nothing as long as it's not a rust bucket.

Maybe I'm too old to have calibrated eyeballs anymore, but I would never rely upon an "eyeball" assessment of a cam's profile to determine lift or duration. That is why God invented the dial indicator . Even if the car LOOKS to be a genuine ( the passenger's side rear view mirror delete is a myth, as I own two of them WITH passenger side rear mirrors ) XFI, looks simply won't tell. A vin number with MS in it is not a guarantee, either, as motors do get changed. The only way that you can be sure of the car's true identity is to MEASURE the cam with a micrometer, if the cam is presently installed (which would be the case with a working engine), verses a micrometer measurement with a cam removed from the engine. Next would be to verify the final drive ratio. Other than verifying these measurements, all bets are of. Good luck with your purchase.

Hahaha oh god I sure hope so! I plan to take a mechanic class by a college here soon. I know almost nothing about cars.
I only know the basics when it comes to buying a car...

You guys are too worried about the damn cam. it takes 10 minutes to swap out. Make sure the trans is the 3.79. I would say screw laying on your back and counting. Take the car out for a drive and see how many rpms it is running.
Make sure the tires are the right size so it might mess up the tach. Someone with an xfi and stock tires will tell you how many rpms you should be at while running 55mph.

The most important thing is the frame rust. an early 90s geo is easy to turn into an xfi.....but I understand if you want a true xfi.

Lots of good advice. Is it just me ? I have XFI and Non- XFI and they drive VERY different in my opinion. I would take a hundred dollar bet that driving blindfolded (assuming I survived) I could tell an XFI from a standard. Of course this is primarily the transmission ratio I am feeling, it doesn't guarantee the motor is XFI. However, if the tranny feels XFI , I would guess the motor is too and as someone has mentioned the cam could be easily changed if it wasn't.

Look around the rear window, on the bottom, notice how it's body colored on the white car, and black on the other car?
(neither picture is mine)

So , how do you tell how many rpms it's running when the XFi didn't come with a tach?

Thx.

I did see my first xfi yesterday when I met up with Geozone. Not that I would be trying to be a poser, or deceive anyone by doing so, but I kinda like the look of the trim-less rear windows. Looks cleaner. I'm kinda torn between removing and painting the areas between the door and rear glass and also between the rear side glass and the hatch glass... or redoing the black and adding black in between my side and hatch glasses, to flow with the window tint (if that makes sense)

I wonder who owns the white xfi. Would like to see a rear profile view of it to see the rear corner.
