Red Metro: What Santa really drives.

Another trip up to scoob's place planned today, the TV I got from his girlfriend's father somehow blew the brand new bulb, wont be loading it up, just going to take bad bulb. Laughed at the recall list for my car: NHTSA Recall History 1990-91: Front seatbelt release button can break and pieces can fall inside, causing improper operation. 1990-93: Mislocated spot welds of hood striker assembly cause cracks to start on hood inner panel; then, striker assembly may not properly engage latch, allowing hood to fly up while car is in motion. Funny stuff, I already guessed the hood flying up was how the windshield got smashed. Created an ecomodder page for my car to track mpg as I get it fixed up: ![]() Only getting the average for the car, but considering the crappy condition of the car when I got it, and the fact that I didn't know how to drive stick when I got the car, I'm just happy I'm getting twice the MPG of my buick! Once I get it fixed up enough, I do plan on doing some eco mods to it. Right now, we have to do things like time it properly for good gas mileage. Its currently set to take advantage of all the power it has. Car has been named 'Cherry' for several reasons: 1) couldn't think up a better one in the first few weeks 2) it popped my geo cherry after helping work on them for the past year or two 3) it came to me cherry red 4) I want to paint it black, where it can be renamed black cherry no problem 5) the cherry condition it was in when I got it! EDIT: I don't have permission to edit the threat title, can some mod put the title as 'Cherry: 91 4 door geo commuter' with subtitle of 'Formally known as Yet-to-be-named' Thanks a bunch! Made trip to see scoobs today, got 42.9 mpg when I filled up when I got back, mostly highway on those hilly roads, some city driving. Hoping to top 50 mpg during the trip to texas next weekend. And maybe to the TN meet hopefully! Plagued by gremlins the whole trip, first my positive battery terminal came loose on the road up there, and of course it turns out my adjustment screw to hold it in place is rusted in place, then the wire to my cig lighter came undone, and I found out that theres somehow a loose wire in my inner fuse box leading to the cig lighter, where it only gets power if I press up on the fuse box.... Plus my horn doesn't work for some reason, and some (nice gentleman) in a pick up truck cut me off on the highway, there was a left turn lane off the two lane highway, he was in it and he decided that he was supposed to go straight not turn, and just came on over last minute without signaling while I was doing 55.... Screeching tires and nearly going into the ditch later, I manage to miss him by about a foot, nearly wet myself there..... |

Horn unplugged. Tighten two screws that hold the fuse box in, loose ground. Battery terminals are 2.50 at Wally world |

ok, so I have majorly dropped the ball on updating the thread on my car, clearly.... Its been running fine, and I just come on here to lurk and haven't posted much at all, not even bothering to log in... Theres a thread on the general board about lurkers should post more, and so here I am! Since december whats happened... ok, we fixed the 2 stuck lifters, some of the clicking went away, but not all of it. Its had the same clicking noise since I got the car some 9000 miles ago, and as strong as ever! Stronger then I first got it, even... I think regular fluid changes and use finally cleared the cobwebs out from it sitting and the abuse of former owners. Not many changes in recent months, it runs great, no major trips (until now, I'll comment on that in a minute) and next to no actual work on it done besides general cosmetic issues trying to make it look slightly better, nothing brag worthy. ANYHOW... I'm down on a visit to my mother in houston, the drive down was very uneventful, I went in the middle of the night, did 50-65 the whole way, not really eco mile-ing it much, was somewhat in a hurry since there was a little one asleep in the back and I wanted to get there before he woke up, still got 43 mpg. Got in around 7 am, my mother wanted me to run her around on errands, she has a ford van that gets 8 mpg, I have a metro that gets better then 5 times that, makes sense to me... ANYHOW on the second to last trip ofthe day, going to visit someone at their house, I had just went around a corner in second gear, went to shift into third, and suddenly my gear shifter felt really loose, and like it was dropping up and down, it still shifted (with trouble) but it weird to do so, and when I gave it gas the stick would bounce up and down.... Anyhow I coasted to a stop right in front of the guy's house, we went in, visited, and called AAA, got a free tow home. Now its sitting in her driveway, and I've got to go out there in daylight and see whats wrong... this was all yesterday and today I had stuff to do with my little one and visiting my brother while I'm down here, but I'll have a spare few hours tomorrow morning to go out and take a look at it! Why do city people sleep at night, and complain if you are banging on things or have light.... Give me the country and my house, I have one neighbor, who doesn't care at all if I go out at night with a flashlight and do minor repairs... Night people are people too! Instead I get to spend all night lurking the how to threads and videos on youtube. Gonna take the shifter boot cover thingy off in the morning, and I'll take some pictures. I told helterskelter about it, since hes down here in houston, and he told me what to look for. Edited by Oden, May 10 2013, 12:56 AM.

Im guessing shifter boot dosengrated. Best bet if so is to take the boot off and fill it in woth windshield weld. Simple fix, but the weld is like $18 and takes a good 24 hours to fully cure |

I used to piss off the yuppie next door neighbors by doing some welding at 2 am when my wife and I lived in Tulsa. Had they been polite to my wife, (who is easily the nicest person in the world) and not turned their nose up at her all the time, and got their friends to stop blocking our driveway when they came over, I´d not feel I had to do those kinds of things. Protip: when you tell your friends it´s ok to block the neighbor´s driveway, make sure the neighbor doesn´t have a KLR650. Cause when he rides it through your yard to get to work it tears up the grass. Quite a lot of progress on that little car. Once you have a good look around under the hood and under the chassis of one of these things, you find it is all very simple, and a soviet farmer with bilateral frostbite who spent the previous night celebrating the culmination of the last 5 year plan with a jug of wood alcohol could get it running. I have wondered for years, but never though to ask - do the four door hatchback cars get the same mileage as the two door hatchback cars? |

Well, I've only had a 4 door, so don't know personally, but when comparing my car to desmond's old 2 door, and some of the other 2 doors in our local fleet, to his and mine current 4 doors, there is a 5 mpg drop or so, that is if I remember correctly, desmond would know better. Update on my car's problems: ![]() That doesn't look good! |

So... this is probably a stupid, I was browsing a different thread and they were talking about mpg with 13 inch tires, I run 13 inch tires not 12s, and I've been forgetting to redo my calculations when making gas milage calculations! I read that I multiply millage by 1.077 from what I got on the odometer? Redoing the math calculations from the trip down, that means I got.... 46.5 not eco miling? ALSO! You can tell I never lock my doors, we went to walmart the other day, and we tried to lock the passenger side door, and I remembered from my initial notes when I got the cr that theres no lock assembly for it, just a hole where the key should go.... Texted scoobs, hes got a whole new set of locks he can sell me cheap, plus a few other parts I needed for the car, so when my car is up and running and back in arkansas, another trip to see him will happen very quickly... Finally a good weather day! So I figured out what caused my problem, the screws that held my back motor mount snapped. ![]() causing the engine to drop a few inches, pulling out the rubber thingy that holds the shifter up, breaking it.
