I have, on three separate occasions now, offered to buy a Geo. (For the asking price) and been told "The car has been sold"...only to look up a couple days later and find the car in a junkyard. What in the hell is going on? Are junkyards paying that much for cars? |

Dude... that's crazy! We junked an Aspire once, got a little over 200 bucks for it. Which, since we originally had paid about 200 for it, seemed pretty fair.

It's more likely that someone has bought the car you are inquiring about, stripping it, and then dumping the chassis than the junkyards buying these cars from private sellers. |

They're complete cars. I thought that at first, but I inspected two of them and they are just as complete as the were when I inquired about them. I really just don't understand it. |

Got 70 MPG?

Can you buy them from the junkyard whole? Or would they want an unreasonable price? |

In Texas they won't sell you a whole care, something about some bs they can't as I offered to buy whole Metro once. |

Wont sell whole car here either. Probably make more money selling the parts and salvage. |

The very first car, a blue 4 door hatch, went to the junkyard a couple days I inquired. I believe the people were asking 300. I said okay and would have the money. Fast forward several days. I'm rummaging through a junkyard and see the Metro. EXACTLY like it was in the people's driveway. Junkyard wanted about 1200 IIRC. |

Well I know in my area they pay between 200 to 300 for a junker or less. Depends if they have an engine or not. Don't usually pay that much for metros but will for like trucks. You can get em in my area before they go in the yard but they want to at least double their money--- so you have to pay maybe 600 to 1200 for something they paid 200 or 300 for. Once they go from the holding area to the yard they will not sell em. I think people just get in a hurry for the $ and also just get tired of a car siting around. Then don't offer to buy the "whole" car. Tell 'em you just want to buy both halves of the car, at the same time. |

once a car is junked it's not street legal anymore. it's considered scrap, not a car. i had a junkyard guy explain it to me but i forgot. that's the gist of it though. it has something to do with the car not having or being able to get a title anymore so the junkyard can't screw people over by selling the cars as cars or something like that.

That makes a lot of sense. Salvage title, maybe? |

no, you can't even get a salvage title. it's not a car anymore, it's just a pile of parts. i think they do something with the vin number too to make sure it can't be registered anymore. |

They dont do anything to the vin itself, they do however go to the DMV/revenue office and submit the vin as salvage, then the car is deemed salvaged, aka parts. You can get a salvaged title on a car, but it from what i understood needs to be saftey inspected afterwards and there is a penalty on the title, always will have a salvaged stamp or print on it. OFC every state is different when it comes to salvaging a vehicle |

Anyone remember the 14 junkyard Metros I posted last year? They were all on CL between $800 - $2000. The junkyards pay $300 - $600 for a running Metro. If a dealer or private owner wants $1500 for one you have to offer $600 - $800 and wait for them to realize your offer is the best they'll get. So what if they hold firm on their price, just wait. A whole Metro with A/C, good body no accidents, was cheaper than A/C parts at junkyard prices. |
