Alright kids this is gonna be more of a rant, but please respond with times where you stuck up for yourself but knew it was a losing battle. So I clean carpets for Stanley steemer. I'm an assistant and have to sell mats, bottles of spot remover and odor out. I have to average $10 per house for the pay period. The previous 2 pay periods I had $14.50 per house. This last pay period I had only $4.50 per house. Way short of the $10. I've worked in sales before and know that any time you don't hit your numbers, your manager always says how you gotta get your numbers up and yadda yadda. Well, after this last pay period, my boss called me and told me I need to up my house total. I agreed. No problem. This morning before we go out in the vans, my boss calls me into the office. He says the same thing and everything is fine. He says that if there are 2 back to back periods of less than $10 then he would have to let me go. I knew all that and wasn't worried because for this pay period, I am probably at $18 per house. Then he said he knew what I was doing. I ask what he means. He tells me I am picking and choosing which houses to show to. That was not at all the case. I never rode with him. I only rode with two other guys the whole time that would know. I explain to him that I showed it to almost every house and it was just pay period. He said no, it was that I was picking and choosing again. Now if I were doing that, I would have just said ok, but I don't like people telling me that I'm doing something when I'm not. I told my boss to ask the guys I worked with. He said he didn't need to (he's one of those know it all guys). I told him only those guys would know for sure and he threw the whole, "if you wan't, I can send you home now". I told him to do it and he did. So now im jobless again. Probably didn't handle it the right way, but some times you gotta stand up for yourself. Before you say im dumb because there are no jobs, you are right. I saved my money while working here so I have plenty of money to survive on. If I had kids or a house, I probably wouldn't have left, but I don't. I had to choices..... 1. Shut up and keep my job. 2. Stick up for myself and keep my job. Either way I was going to lose. And before some of you guys say that I'm a disrespectful employee, this is the first place I've been fired from. Almost every other place I left said I could have my job back if I wanted it. This guys by far was the worst boss I ever had. Anyways, you guys have any stories of standing up for yourself? |

No stories off the top of my head (plus I'm at work), but I think you made the right choice. It sounds like that was a shit job to start off with (or at least shit for management). |

Shit job it was!!!! You didn't have a set schedule, you didn't know when you would get off for the day. Manager got his job because he was at the right place at the right time......that never works. |

Sounds like a dick. Someone I wouldn't work for. You probably made a good life choice imo. Sales sucks. I couldn't sell products for a living. Sounds like you've planned for this type of situation so just bang out a resume and get back in it. |

Thanks 98. I might take a break and prepare for school in the spring. Yea you are right I was planning on leaving in january anyway. The job was mostly cleaning carpets. I can sell products, not really a fan though. |

Sorry to hear about your job. Hopefully you have been pushed to greener grass. Maybe you can find an even better job. Best of luck to you. |

I had a somewhat similar situation. Working a fred meyer in high school I worked in the garden center as a retail/cashier. I worked with this old guy that was the type who always does shit the hard way because he's a stubborn moron. Next thing you know my boss retired and they gave this old bastard her job and now not only do we have the same hours after that (before he worked earlier than me for the most part) but he became my boss and he loved to tell me what to do all night and micromanage a job I had been doing for months perfectly well without him. Then one night he calls me on the radio and asks me what I'm doing so I told him I was closing my register and sweeping the floors and facing shelves. So then he said to finish up outside and then come in the back and get a patio set for a customer. I said ok and continued doing my job. 5 mins later he calls me back asming if I had gotten it yet and I told him I was still finishing things up and he got mad and said nevermind and purposely didn't let go of the talk button on his radio so I could hear him talk shit about me. He proceeded to tell the customer that he would get it himself because he had sent a boy to do a man's job! I was furious. I made a complaint to another boss and they wouldn't do anything about it and wouldn't transfer me to another department so I quit. Not the same situation but if people don't show you respect, fuck em. They don't deserve it in return. That's my philosophy. |

evmetro are you telling me to smoke better weed? lol jk. I don't smoke weed. thanks though I texted the guy I usually ride with and apologized to him and the other assistant just in case one of them were suppose to have the day off. I don't like other co workers getting screwed over. 98, I understand your situation. I have worked with tons of great bosses, but every once in a while you get that one. The one that isn't good at his/her job and doesn't respect the employees. This thread isn't just for jobs |

Ive heard that line bunches of times when I was in sales. I justed treated it the same as the other lines in regards to talk time needs to be lower, availability needs to be higher, you need to transfer less calls, you need to get better surveys, you need to miss less work, you need to show up on time, you need to take your breaks and lunches on time, etc, etc, etc.

Stuff like this has broken me on my current job. I don't have quite enough money saved up to feel comfortable quitting, but I'm not going to break my back for them anyways. I was the best worker, by far, in the shop when I had my last yearly evaluation. A manager who I've seen all of ten minutes did the evaluation, and came up with some bull reasons to give me a smaller raise. So, there goes my incentive to work hard. Why bust my but when it doesn't get me anything else? So, I'm about to go in in a few minutes, drag my feet, play the time clock, take a bit longer paid breaks. Do all my bathroom duties on the clock. I'll slack off, and still be one of the best workers in the shop, but they'll never get as much work out of me as they used to. |

Horn, I was just refering to the phrase "the grass is always greener on the other side" Sometimes we have our eyes on it and wonder. I hope that now that you have been forced to the "other side", that the grass IS greener for you. BTW, your timing of this thread is perfect because my home is in need of service. I will be scheduling with the competion on your behalf. |

In a semi-previous life I was a worker at Albertsons... the hardest of the workers. I did WAY MORE work then anyone else and eventually it began to eat at me. I never got any recognition, they gave the dumbest fu<% the employee of the month thingy, and on top of that I NEVER got a raise. So come holidays (thanksgiving) and its busy as all hell. I work my self to the point of exhaustion and await black friday (on that day it is DEAD in a grocery store so they let you go home early). But...NO. They let the laziest and most self-absorbed a$$hole go home early instead of me. That was the last time that happened... I threw a "fit" so big that every person within a few hundred feet turned their heads to watch me rip my manager a new butthole. I then turned to the lazy employee who was a total waste of human spunk (mouthbreather) and let loose my demons upon his poor soul. The moral is: Dont fu<% with the wrong person because they may have had just enough... Note: It is my personal opinion based on a wide range of experiences that some human beings are a waste of perfectly good carbon. These humans should be known as "mouthbreathers" and should not be wasted any time or effort upon. They are simply background characters in a systematic insanity machine labeled LIFE. It is therefore in your best interests to ignore them and carry on. Their deaths will be of NO effect in our system |

Yeah I can relate a story of when I stood up for myself when most would bow down. Iraq 2003 of June had dick team leader who thought I was driving to rough over bumps in road and going to fast, now mind you 3rd world country got back to base fucker wanted me to do pushups on asphalt I told him to kiss my ass and took it up the rank. Needless to say I became team leader and he got moved to another platoon. |
