Is a Bloomin' Onion at Outback Steakhouse a gateway drug? Ordering that usually leads to ordering a steak dinner, and maybe some apple pie.
Is automobile insurance a gateway drug? Once you have car insurance, the agent is going to keep after you to get homeowners (or renters) insurance, life insurance, personal excess liability insurance, and the list goes on.
Are computers gateway drugs? As a customer of mine once said back in the early days of IBM compatible computers, PC stood for "Purchase Constantly".
Is Beer a gateway drug? I started out drinking beer, discovered wine, then discovered Jack Daniels. 'nuff said.
If the guy that is selling you pot is also selling meth, heroin, etc., then yes, marijuana might be a gateway drug. I'm sure there is more profit to the dealer in harder drugs.
If you want to lower the likelyhood of marijuana being considered a "gateway" drug, then make all drugs legal, reducing the profit margins, and the glamor of using or selling drugs, tremendously. Next, put distribution into the hands of the retail sector, where it can be taxed. Take the tax money, treat current addicts, and fund educational programs similar to what has been used with Tobacco, to help young people not start using drugs in the first place.

Found this quote about what the state is going to do in a sort of related article.

While it is now legal for adults 21 or over to possess up to an ounce of marijuana in Washington state, it is still illegal to grow or sell the drug. The state has until late next year to come up with a system of state-licensed growers, processors and retail stores, with the marijuana taxed 25 percent at each stage.
25%!!!!! I see people are still going to be buying it the way they always have.

25% is cheap.
*disclaimer* this is my best guess at how it would work, I don't claim that to be fact.

From Washington state web site..."The Washington tax on a pack of 20 cigarettes is $3.025 and on a pack of 25 cigarettes is $3.78125". Last I looked they are around $8 a pack. Glad I'm not a smoker no more, think I would be broke all the time!
