Just curious how the antique auto tag requirements read in your state.

Heres Tennessee

Antique Motor Vehicles. Per Tennessee Code Ann. § 55-4-111, a person may register a vehicle as an “antique motor vehicle”
providing that certain requirements are satisfied. The vehicle:
• Must be a motor vehicle over twenty-five (25) years old and have a non-modified engine and body,
• Can be used for participation in, or transportation to and from, club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, and similar uses as a collector’s item,
• Can only be used for general transportation on Saturday and Sunday, and
• Can be used on any day for the purpose of selling, vehicle testing, or obtaining repairs to or doing maintenance on the vehicle.

One time tag purchase, no inspection required
Cost of registration. Class (C) Antique Vehicles - registration fee is $27.75, plus any applicable county fees.

Virginia:

If you plan to use your antique vehicle or trailer solely as a collector's item, you may register your vehicle with antique license plates or permanent vintage license plates.

Registering your vehicle either of these ways limits your use of the vehicle to:
•Participation in antique car club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, and similar events.
•Testing its operation, obtaining repairs or maintenance, selling the vehicle or trailer, transportation to and from events as described in number 1 above and for the occasional pleasure driving not to exceed 250 miles from your residence.
•Carrying or transporting passengers, personal effects or other antique motor vehicles being transported for show purposes.

You may not use your vehicle for general, daily transportation. This includes, but is not limited to, driving to and from work.

If you are providing vintage license plates, then the year embossed on the license plate must match the model year of the vehicle. In addition, DMV must inspect and approve the physical condition of the vintage plates.

one-time $50 fee

Virginia Code, Section 46.2-730, requires evidence that the applicant named above owns or has regular use of another passenger car ormotorcycle. Antique license plates will not be issued without this evidence.

California:

V C Section 5004 Vehicles of Historic Value
Vehicles of Historic Value
5004. (a) Notwithstanding any other provision of this code, any owner of a vehicle described in paragraph (1), (2), or (3) which is operated or moved over the highway primarily for the purpose of historical exhibition or other similar purpose shall, upon application in the manner and at the time prescribed by the department, be issued special identification plates for the vehicle:
(1) A motor vehicle with an engine of 16 or more cylinders manufactured prior to 1965.

(2) A motor vehicle manufactured in the year 1922 or prior thereto.

(3) A vehicle which was manufactured after 1922, is at least 25 years old, and is of historic interest.

(b) The special identification plates assigned to motor vehicles with an engine of 16 or more cylinders manufactured prior to 1965 and to any motor vehicle manufactured in the year 1922 and prior thereto shall run in a separate numerical series, commencing with "Horseless Carriage No. 1".

The special identification plates assigned to vehicles specified in paragraph (3) of subdivision (a) shall run in a separate numerical series, commencing with "Historical Vehicle No. 1".

Each series of plates shall have different and distinguishing colors.

(c) A fee of twenty-five dollars ($25) shall be charged for the initial issuance of the special identification plates. Such plates shall be permanent and shall not be required to be replaced. If such special identification plates become damaged or unserviceable in any manner, replacement for the plates may be obtained from the department upon proper application and upon payment of such fee as is provided for in Section 9265.

(d) All funds received by the department in payment for such identification plates or the replacement thereof shall be deposited in the California Environmental License Plate Fund.

(e) These vehicles shall not be exempt from the equipment provisions of Sections 26709, 27150, and 27600.

(f) As used in this section, a vehicle is of historic interest if it is collected, restored, maintained, and operated by a collector or hobbyist principally for purposes of exhibition and historic vehicle club activities.

Amended Ch. 918, Stats. 1984. Effective January 1, 1985.

I haven't checked, but I assume that the three sections mentioned in paragraph (e) refer to safety and emissions equipment...some historical vehicles are new enough to require catalytic converters, which must still be in place and functional

Washington:

Collector Vehicle plates
Requirements
For vehicles:

To use collector plates, vehicles must be:

More than 30 years old.
Capable of operating on the highway.
Owned and operated as collector vehicles.

For license plates:

Collector Vehicle plates:

May be assigned to currently registered passenger vehicles, motorcycles, or trucks.
Are good for the life of vehicle (aren’t renewed annually).
Don’t need to display month/year tabs.
Must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle. (You must provide your restored or current license plates. If you provide a set, the collector vehicle plates may be displayed on the front and rear of the vehicle).

For driving:

You can drive a collector vehicle:

To and from auto shows, circuses, parades, displays, special excursions, and antique car club meetings.
For testing purposes.
For the pleasure of others without compensation.

You can’t drive a collector vehicle for regular transportation in the manner of a fully licensed vehicle.
How to apply

Complete a Special License Plate Application.
Contact your local licensing office to determine the exact cost of your plates, including all licensing and service fees.
If you want to use restored license plates, provide your restored license plate (or plates) for the vehicle.
Submit your completed application, plates, and fees:
In person at a vehicle licensing office.
or
By mail to:
Vehicle Licensing
Department of Licensing
PO Box 9909
Olympia, WA 98507-8500

Option to use restored license plates

You may use a restored license plate on your collector vehicle instead of a Collector Vehicle plate. Restored license plates are Washington-issued license plates that were designed for use in the year of the vehicle’s manufacture. The license plates must be restored so they can be identified with their year of issue. A reproduction of the original can’t be used as a restored license plate.

My '78 F250 has Year-Of-Manufacture plates on it. They look sooo much better on the truck than new ones!!
