Looks like I will be shifting my attention to my tacoma prerunner for abit. Valve cover gaskets are giving out and dripping on the exhaust manifolds. I snugged up all the bolts I could reach tonight so I hope it helps until next week when I can give it my full attention. Anybody have any advice? Looks like a pretty straight forward job... just have to remove quite a bit of "stuff" to get to the valve covers. I beleive the gaskets are rubber. Can I use EZ turn fuel lube on these?

Lol...I have a '93 4Runner with a 3VZ-E I am getting ready to do the same job on. Seems like all the VZ engines have leaky valve covers. And you are right...pulling the upper intake to get to that passenger side valve cover is a pain in the ass!

I don't know of anything else that will solve the problem other than pulling the covers off and changing the gaskets.

Friend has a 91 forerunner with the v6 in it, I suppose it is the 3VZ-E engine your speaking of. Called me here while back to check it out, running hot on him. Blown head gasket or cracked head. Dont know if toyota still puts the 22re engine in any of their trucks but after working on the one I have in a 86 forerunner and seeing his v6, I had rather have the 22re anytime. Smooth running engine and fairly easy to work on.

Mine is a 1999 V6 with 177,000 or so miles. What a great truck! The only thing I have ever had give up on it was a starter about 6 or 7 years ago and the flywheel/flex-plate (it was cracked in 3 places!) 2 years ago.
Its on its 4th set of tires, has had the windshield replaced once, plugs and wires(3) once, and a battery once. I have done regular oil changes since I bought it with 23,000 on it. I did replace the transmission filter once also.
The engine still drives just like it did the day I bought it. Lots of power, still a great driver.
I was in Iraq a few years back and someone hit my daughter while she was driving and did quite a bit of damage to the passenger side and bed. I got everything I could out of the guys Allstate insurance. They paid everything without blinking an eye. I'm not a big fan of Allstate at all. Crooks.

He should call Toyota. The head gaskets they used on the V6 from mid-'89 to mid-'95 are defective. They tried making them out of graphite instead of asbestos to placate the eco-freeks. Toyota will change them for FREE if they have not already done it once.

Mileage doesn't matter and neither does the age of the vehicle. It is what Toyota calls "Special Service Campaign V06". My 4Runner had it done in March, 1998 according to a sticker on the firewall.

The 22R-E is a great engine, but 120 horsepower pulling a 4000 pound SUV is pretty bad. Hell, my V6 has 150 horsepower, factory 4.88 gears, and it is gutless too! I'd take a stripper 4WD 'Runner with a 22R-E and a 5-speed, but with all the options it would be awful to drive.

Thanks for that information about the campaign. Will tell him to look into that.

I can't help but just wanted to mention that I have an '06 Taco (prerunner V6 access cab). Has been a good truck. I need to do an auto tranny fluid change in the very near future. I've never done one before so this should be a good learning experience.

Yes it's going to be a little bit of a hassle but it's not that difficult to take off that intake. Just a bunch of 12's , where you are going to have an issue is that egr pipe on the passenger side.If you don't have the right size wrench it will be a pain ( I think it was a 27mm ?) any way it's big.
"Special service campaigns" are also up to the dealers discretion .So it means that they may help you they may not, it all depends on how often you service your vehicle , millage what accessories you have on the engine , and so on.
The 22re was in the 4Runner and yes it was a bad ass engine. I had (97) one and I never had a single problem with it. I had the stick shift 2WD so moving that 4000 LBS truck was no problem.
As far as the fluid change in your 06 Taco rmcelwee I'd check the manual. Some of these Toyotas don't even have a recommendation in regards to that. If you have 100000 miles I'd say ok but if it's running like always without any change I would not touch it.

This can be true...until you make a call to Japan. The last thing any US dealership service manager wants is an angry call from Mr. Yamamoto over in Toyota City. If you get an approved work order directly from Toyota the dealerships pretty much have to do it. Most dealerships don't mind as they are paid by Toyota for the work. A buddy of mine was a Toyota tech at the height of this campaign. He personally did over 20 of them and can still "do them in his sleep". I am sure most techs are the same.

Toyota has done a pretty good job of standing by their product with regard to this problem.

If one dealer tells you to pound sand, try another. If they all balk, call Toyota of America. If you still don't get any joy, it's "Yamamoto Time"

As far as I know, S.S.C. V06 is still active. But some of the vehicles affected are 20+ years old, so you should tell your buddy not to delay.

Called toyota today and his had been done in 97. Six years after it was new. They had not put the sticker on it or we could not find one. I asked the service department if they were still doing this and they said yes but at the dealers descretion. What ever that means.
