Some (all?) of the Dino oils do wear out/break down/evaporate.
The extreme example is WD40, designed to evaporate and leave a gummy sludge behind - not for lubrication.
You're comparing a highly formulated penetrating oil/solvent (or whatever it is) to pretty much the first thing that comes out of the refinery?

well speaking of oil, are there any very good deals on oil right now. I'm not talking about a jug and oil filter for $21.99.

Im looking for a Coche Blanco special.

The WD40 was just an extreme example of a multipart formulation that leaves crap behind (but great for de-watering electrical and rust prevention).

Motor oils are also highly refined, with multiple hydrocarbon components and non-oil additivesas outline above http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Motor-oil#Properties

Here's a good example of the burn test

I'd seen a different example before.

tar can also come from crude oil and is terrible to use as motor oil. i think this is a better extreme example of something not to use as a lubricant that also comes from crude oil. :thumb
