Oil leak caused engine to knock

So I've known that my metro had an oil leak for a while now. But I didn't realize that my oil was as low as it was until it was too late.. I was driving down the road and it started knocking.. I shut it off right away.

I was just wondering if this means I'm going to have to rebuild my engine... Or just add oil?

Sounds like the damage is done - you can add oil but I expect a rebuild is in the near future for you. Good Luck!

Do you know where I can get a rebuild kit and how much it might cost?

From personal experience, I recommend against a "kit".
I bought a kit from eBay. Yay, it's cheap! Yeah... yay.

You're better off spending more money to get good, quality parts.
Do it right the first time.

:gp I bought a "kit" in my ignorance and 50k miles later the Apex headgasket went south so I got to change it. Ending up doing much of the work twice... I'd have gladly paid a bit more up front had I known at the time that I was just buying trouble. Good Luck!

Well I think I've narrowed down my problem to the head.. After further investigation, the car only knocks when I rev up the engine. And, it sounds like its coming from the head. I've also noticed that cylinder 2 is burning oil. That would be where it all went!

Any ideas what my problem might be?

STOP! It sounds like you have damage to a piston assembly. pull it apart and see what is wrong. If you keep running it parts might come out the side of your engine.

I stopped right away. We have the valve cover off at the moment. Ran out of time for now. Might be a couple weeks before I get back to the car. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas of what I should look at first..

Wouldn't that be making noise at idle if that were the problem?

The previous owner of "The Mighty Metro" ran the engine out of oil. It killed the #1 rod throw on the crankshaft, and the camshaft bearing surfaces, and scored the cylinder walls.
