Yep, I bought her brand spankin new from the dealer 17 years ago. Still running the same as it was when I bought it. All I have had to do besides routine maintaining was a used tranny and that ended up being an upgrade once I got used to the 4:10 ratio. She is still the one and I drive her almost every day. I may have to leave this one off of my list of metros to convert to electric until the gas motor is done...

Evmetro, How much do you like the 4.10 in the heavier metros.

I put 3.79 in mine and I really think it was too much....

We have been together for 20 years now. Still runs like new. Up to 1/4 million miles on it, pretty much everything is original other than the transmission, belts, tires, windshield, and other consumables. The transmission is the only thing that has ever had to be replaced on this Metro that was not a regular consumable. It took a bicyclist in the windshield about a year or two ago and I had to do some bodywork, but it is all good now and runs as new.

Here is what the bicyclist did to my Metro.

And here is what I did to get it back on the road:

And here it is fixed. New windshield, mirror, and fender. Good as new.

I remember the thread where you fixed her up......long time ago.....

How did the change from 4.39 to 4.10 effect your hwy mpg?

Replacing the regular cam with a xfi cam makes a huge difference....... the lower rpm torque curve really makes a huge difference. You can hit 5th gear sooner, and stay in it with out needing to down shift as often.

At the moment I have my factory xfi cam advanced to 16 degrees
(10 degrees plus the xfi cam has 6 degrees built into it)
And my ignition timing is advanced to about 21 degrees with no ping.
My low end torque is unreal! .......it pulls hard just off idle. City driving is so much easier, there is no lag in power at lower rpm.
High rpm power?........nope....lol

I don't really track the mpg on this rig. I swap transmissions on this thing often to test transmissions that I build, so I have gotten used to lots of different ratios in this same car. My favorite all around is the 410, for now at least. I generally run this car really hard in twisty mountain and foothill roads, as well as lots of freeway, and lots of city traffic. While the 439 has a little more pep, I don't like shifting so much, and I don't like the trap on steep grades where 3rd is too much and 4th is not enough. The 379 is sweet, but it has the same "trap" between 4th and 5th when I am up around 70 and 80 mph on flat ground. I don't care much about mpg, since I am already driving a Metro, and the 410 seems like the best all around ratio.

The electric metro fleet is a whole different story. Essentially unlimited torque, but limited torque band. The 379 is like the 439 in a 3 cyl, and 352 is better. I wish there was a 2.xx ratio available.

Even though the police reported it as the bicyclists fault, I just left it alone. He was in a weird shape and did not look right when the ambulance hauled him off, so I did not want to know the outcome. I just left it alone, and I got my ride put back together for a couple hundred bucks.

Especially when it only takes a couple hundred bucks to total a metro. Without having that trade and a shop, I probably would not be celebrating 20 years with this ride.
