93 3 cyl Canadian-made, 6 pin diagnostics connector???; Having trouble figuring out which pins to short for timing

Got a 93 Metro 5-door, built in Canada, changed water pump and timing belt, trying to set the timing, as it's only getting about 28-30 mpg. Can't figure out what the proper way is to short it, where the Short Bar is at, per se. The diagnostic connector I've got is 6-pin, with 5 wires and 1 empty spot. Everything I've found on line (including here) seems to be talking about a 4-pin connector. I'm pretty certain I've got the right connector, but don't know how to short it properly.

Also, with it shorted, is it 17 degrees, or 6, or ? Performance is good, but MPG rules.

Thanks!

JT

Short the terminals of the black wire and the purple/green wire. Yes it is a six pin connector located under the hood. Set at 5degrees.

Plug vacuum lines? Or does that not have vacuum? I set mine at 8. :-S. it should show you what to do in under hood diagram. Mine does.. But it says 6. Also, Canadian cars, do they all have the lights on all the time? I hate it. Only time lights are off is with e brake on, I'm wondering if there's an easy fix to disable driving lights. 30mpg is horrible did you do a compression test?

Look down the barrel of the plug, as if you were going to plug it into your nose, with the little bump pointing up. Short the left and center wires on the bottom row. blue rhino's description by color is probably more valuable. Factory setting, with the wires shorted is 5° before, that's for emissions purposes. The car will run better set at 8° before. Without jumpering the wires, you'll probably see 17° and jumping all over.

Woodie is right for future knowledge their should be a sticker on the underside of the hood that describes this.

factory recommends 5 btdc people here like 8. i don't think you will see that much of a difference between them. timing changes when you start driving anyway... it will just return to what you have it set at at idle.

The lights on this one are on a switch. Ya should be able to put a switch in inline to disable the lights, if you want to.

Problems include it being a #(&! automatic. Now I'm wondering how big a deal it'd be to put a manual (5 speed available?) in it.
