So I recently had a problem come along with my 1994 metro. I was driving down the highway and all of a sudden I started to feel the power of my metro subside and a sputter/ticking noise coming out of the muffler. So I let off the gas and when I pressed back down the metros power returned but only for a few minutes before the noise came back. I replaced the fuel filter and the problem has seemed to subside, but my MPG has been altered I was getting consistent 45-55 mpg now I am at a solid 32-36 tops. Has anyone had this problem ??? Any help would be great. TIA |

Sounds a little like the exhaust is stopped up maybe.

check your catalytic converter. hit it with your hand and see if it is the source of the "sputter/ticking noise" that you heard coming from your exhaust. when the cat starts to go bad it can build up exhaust pressure and you will lose power. hit a bump and the loose particles in the cat shifts around (your ticking noise?) and relieves the backpressure and your power returns. |

Is the check engine light on? If so have you retrieved the fault codes? |

Does the light work? I still might try to retrieve codes. Not all fault errors will trip a check engine light. |

Well I have kept up with maintenance so the light should have no reason to come on. But I will get the codes checked asap. I believe since mine is a 94 the place where I would check is under the hood |

Sounds like a melted cat and it's plugging or restricting exhaust flow. |

you lost power, it god noisy......then power returned.....but mpg has dropped. does your car feel slightly weaker now? when my geo began burning its first valve i was climbing a steep highway speed hill.....lost power, got noisy, backed off gas waited a second then had power return. car was a little weaker but mpg dropped a lot! do a compression check, then do a wet compression check. that will tell you if you started burning a valve. |
