From wiki we get:
[with the head off or using a scope/camera through the spark plug hole] "Valves should be inspected for damage which will prevent proper operation and could lead to catastrophic failure. Cracking, pitting, channeling, and burning are typical problems leading to valve replacement. Even hair-line cracks make a valve unusable. Pitting is permissible in small amounts, but should not be present on the face, margin, or stem. Channeling is a result of uneven heating of a valve (typically from improper seating during operation), and is evident by heat discoloration in an oval shape on the bottom of the valve and often visible at the base of the valve stem. Channeling that continues will lead to a burnt valve, which leads to melting away of a portion of the valve."

Take a look at the pics in pasotx's project: 90 metro motor rebuild bad valve

However, my in-laws 2001 Hyundai Accent would not start the day before yesterday after getting fuel, driving 7 miles and stopping for groceries. :banghead It would not start, turn over, but otherwise nada.

Today I inspected the plugs which looked good. Pulled the air cleaner off and marked the timing belt, sprayed a little starter fluid in and tried to start it. Nada but it did turn over a few times and the timing belt mark moved :) . The car gets driven on short trips and never really has a chance to get the Catalytic converter warmed up. Fortunately I walked over with a small vice-grips in my tool bag so I unscrewed the front O2 sensor. A nice young man from WSU, Pullman, WA offered to help so I asked him if he would try starting the car. I held the throttle plate open a bit, sprayed starting fluid in and it started. LOUD but it started and continued to idle. I have driven it one mile home without the front O2 sensor installed :-/ . I'll re-install it and see if it dies and has tail pipe pressure. If not the constipated Cat. is history.

But yes, the compression on a Geo is the usual suspect. :shake
