Does anyone know of a way to determine if my Geo's computer is bad? Does anyone know of somebody that can repair the computer?

If its been run over by a bulldozer, its bad. Forget getting it repaired and get a junkyarder. Unlikely ecm is the problem. |

I've got two right now, since I thought mine was bad...it wasn't. What makes you think it is bad? |

The reason I suspect the computer is that when I originally got this car it had so many problems I didn't know where to start.. I originally purchased this car at an auction for my son and daughter-in-law . I asked the guy behind the wheels how many miles it had. He said it had 23,500 . (didn't have my glasses. and neither did he. it had 235,000 miles.) it ran good unless you gave it gas. then it smoked like hell.. so far I have replaced the engine, throttle body, throttle body gaskets, exhaust manifold,CV joints, battery, muffler, temperature sending unit, oil sending unit, fuel sending unit, clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, distributor cap ,rotor, spark plugs, oil, oil filter, O2 sensor, map sensor, horn relay, fuel relay, fuel pump, gas tank, wiper blades, cleaned out the clogged up vacuum tubes in the intake manifold, new pcv valve, new thermostat, replaced ground cable to battery, breather assembly replaced, new intake air temp sensor, and also repaired four shorted and broken wires. the last one led to the computer. that's when the fun started with the check engine codes.(I didn't have any codes until this point). I currently have codes 14 and 23 that wont go away.( I'm not getting any signal from the ecm to the relays controling the A/C or the IAT circuit heater at the base of the throttle body..) it runs great after it is warmed up but until then it is hard to start. all i need to do after I clear up the engine codes is replace the headliner and the windshield.. I have cleaned every ground three times, and thinking that when the wire to the computer got broken that someone bypassed everything to get it running and may have damaged the computer by doing so. still need to jump out the diagnostic socket to set the timing to 8 degrees BTDC. .. |

If you have trouble locating one, I traded parts with bansheetaz here while back and he got a 95 3cylinder hatch ecm out of the deal. I think he found out that was not his problem either and shelfed it in case me or him ever needed it. He would probably sell it. |

DAMN SON! ![]() Is there anything your HAVEN"T replaced? Unlikely, but not unheard of, Yes the wrong crossed wire lets out the "magic blue smoke" and BAM you need a new ECU. Did your Metro used to have an auto? ![]() I'm fairly sure the ECM number you posted was for an auto. I could be wrong. |

I took the wrapping off of the wiring harness looking for some sort of short or broken wire but found none. I do have a couple of wires that are connected to other wires but I think they may be factory . not sure? but there are no spare wires that are not terminated. and all of the sensors are connected. and appear to be working properly now. I found another computer on ebay, praying it fixed this problem.. then on to replace the headliner and the windshield.. wish me luck.. |

OK.. I finally am at the point of NO check engine light faults.. THANK GOD...... besides the broken wire to the ECM, which I am glad to say turned out NOT burned up.. I finally got the Haynes service manual for my GEO Metro and was able to track down the culprits.. I had code 14 and 23.. I had replaced the temperature sensor and the ECT sensor, and even the IAT sensor with no success. The plastic connector that clips onto the ect sensor had a broken wire inside of the connector. ( the sensor tested good and I had signal to and from the sensor when tested using the pin method).. The IAT sensor had the same problem, I added a new sensor to the air breather but again the plastic connector had a broken wire inside .. and again the sensor tested good and sticking the wire with pins and testing for voltage showed no problem... Now I need to find out why the A/C won't come on... thanks to all who helped .. |

I forgot to mention that I pulled the headliner and recovered it.. and I also called a local glass installer and they came out to my house and put a new windshield in for the low price of $151. tax included.. Like I said the only problem left now is finding why the relay for the A/C is not getting a signal to turn it on.. any solutions or suggestions appreciated.. thanks. |

Finally? ![]() If you would have asked I'm sure that WELL over half of the members would have been happy to send you theres. The Haynes manual is pure ![]() There are inaccuracies and vague information all through it. This explains why you have replaced so much stuff. I would venture to say there is alot of stuff you replaced that did not need replacing. Water under the bridge at this point. You need to get a FSM (Factory Service Manual) It will give you flow charts so that you can track down the exact problem without throwing $$$ at it. Keep asking questions, alot of us have them and will be happy to reference ours to help you out! ![]() As for your A/C, more than likely one of two situations. Either your A/C is low on Freon, (most likely) or your cutoff switch has gone bad (less likely). It is located on the high pressure line and cuts off for low and high pressure. You can check both situations by disconnecting the connector and putting a jumper wire between the connector and the A/C compressor should cut on. Also, is your blower fan switch working? This will also stop the A/C from cutting on. If not check out my how-to below on how to Zip-tie it. Let us know if you have any more questions!
