CEL code 41; Hard starting

I have a 91 3cyl 5spd, have replaced :timing belt, plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Still hard to start. Ran codes, got 13,14,41 replaced coolant temp sensor. Still hard to start. Repaced coil and got better for a few days. Now hard to start again. Alternator shows a fault when I test it with my battery charger. 13.5 volts at idle when it does run. turn lights, heater and cooling fan on and it wants to die. Could this cause a code 41 and my hard starting? Seems like when I jump off a stronger battery it starts alittle better, but still not good. Stumped, need help please. :banghead

Was that the coil or the pickup coil in the distributor? I would be testing the pickup coil. That coolant temp sensor code 14 could very well be the reason for your hard starting as well as the pickup coil in the distributor. Clear the codes and see what codes come back rather quickly. Address any codes that reappear.

Thanks Blue Rino, it was the Ign. coil on firewall. Also previous owner changed fuel pump. I checked fuel pressure and it was were it is supposed to be both running and off. I did find a bare wire in dist. and insulated with liquid tape. Did'nt help. I just get a put put when cranking. Sometimes it takes several minutes before it will start. Usually I have to hold gas pedal all the way down before it will finally start. It then will run untill you shut it off. 5, 10, 30 minutes of running, then shut it off and right back to hard start again. Jump starting does make it turn over faster and seems to start some better, but still not right. Not sure how to test pickup coil??

If jump starting is helping it turn over faster, try cleaning your grounds, especially the one on the tranny.
I had this same problem on my wifes car. Use a wire brush on it, don't just loosen and retighten.
Give it a try, and report back.

I spent over a month pulling my hair out on that one, until I took it to the guy that rebuilds my starters and alternators. I told him the problem, and he walked out with a wrench, and sand paper, and 5 minutes later the car fired right up.
All I could do was shake my head. :shake

I have had a ground do this as well. Engine turn over and over but not start. Worth checking but with those check engine codes present, dont think thats the problem.

Base model I think, it as A/C and sealed beam headlights. Don't know for sure 1.0 3cyl throttle bodly inj. 2dr with 5speed. This is the second time I have gotten the 41 code. After putting on coil and it starting alittle better I clear codes. Now that it is hard to start I checked codes again. There were no other codes, just 41 this time.

I can only find specs for a xfi model in that year for testing the crankangle sensor/pickup coil in your year model. Maybe someone with a FSM for your year can give you specs on testing it. When all the nut cutting comes down to it, I am going to say you are having and issue with your pickup coil.

Our chevy dealership went out a few years ago , but remained open as used car and service center. I think I will go buy this morning after work and see if they still have a FSM.

Not likely for a 91 model.

Log in. They had technical information you need to test it under the repair manual section. Look for conventional ignition system.
