Just replaced lifters/lash adjusters with new and car runs better; Wanted to give update and see how long she will tick

I finally had a nice day here as well as free time today to tackle lifter replacement this afternoon and evening. I can tell the car already idles and starts smoother than before but was wondering how long I should expect some ticking from the lifters. Should I let it idle until this clears up or go ahead and drive it? I knew this was coming and wasn't surprised but want to do the best I can with these new lifters. I also gave them a fresh change of oil and a new filter to start them out right.

I couldn't wait so I took her for a drive. Took it easy at first until the ticking went away and then let it rip a little more. Anyway, the engine is running much smoother so the new lifters were a good idea.

I assume as long as you keep the oil changed and use quality oil, lifters will outlast the engine. Is this true?

Should last, don't see why not. Good luck.

Good work, Conor. I'm glad it worked.

Use good oil. Drive and enjoy. :thumb

Thanks. I used the Mobil 1 0W40 European Formulation as it is MWebb approved and a Mobil 1 oversize filter. I will try to stock up on some LiquiMoly before the next change as I know that is what you swear by. Never had time to make it to a NAPA...

Is there any kind of break in for new lifters?

Lifter break in? Just run it. They'll be fine.

Thanks. I still had a slight miss at start so I am going to further investigate fuel issues. How common is it for the valves themselves to stick from deposits, etc.? We are dealing with an engine that has a clean EGR and otherwise clean internals. I am not seeing any oil consumption on the dipstick either.

The engine seems to be running smoother as I drive it more since the lifter change. I wonder if there are surfaces inside the lifters that need to wear in. You basically have two cylinders sliding past each other with very close tolerances so I could see some break in helping these. I will let everyone know how this goes with time.

How did you know when you needed to replace your lifters?

The engine started missing badly at startup like a cylinder had no compression. It sounded like it was really chugging and would have to fight to run. This was way worse when the temps outside were colder. You may have a few minutes of barely running and then it will be fine.

This is a nuisance but is a good way to burn valves too so fix it if it isn't too late.
