I tried two different round tooth t-belts on my '93 1.0 that I converted to the round tooth sprockets from a '94. Neither would hardly fit due to being so tight. One of the belts was an OEM Suzuki belt, still no go. I swapped everything back to the old square tooth style and the new belt (square tooth) went right on and the tensioner thingy landed right about in the middle of the slot like they usually do. Doesn't make sense to me as I have done lots of t-belts on Metro's before and never had any issues like this. I'm also having the same exact problem on my '94 twin cam motor. The old wore out belt fits ok but the new Gates belt has the tensioner adjusted all the way loose and it's still damn tight. The one thing these two motors share in common is a Dvorak no-blow head gasket. Is it possible that these are a bit too thick? I had measured one and compared it to an old one and they were the same, so that doesn't seem likely. What am I missing here?

I have stock sprockets on my geo and I almost always have problems with the timing belt being a pain in the @$$ to get on the cam sprocket because they are so tight. I usually get around this by taking the t-belt tensioner off and putting it back on after I get the belt on. I don't know if this will help you or not, but its worth a try. |

That's good to know that I'm not the only one that's had this problem. On the twin cam I ended up breaking off the upper tang on the slotted tensioner piece. This allowed me to swing the tensioner around further and thus become looser. Once I got the belt on I swung it back around and stuck the double ended bolt back in. I'm going to run it this way and keep an eye on belt tension. I'm wondering if these belts stretch a bit during break in. |

My current build has the round tooth belt, as well, with the Dvorak head gasket. It is tighter than the Race Geo, that has the square cogs, with the plain jane head gasket. Both heads are shaved .040. The Race Geo's tensioner, with the run of the mill gasket, is about bottomed out. The XFi Sport build, with the Dvorak gasket has a ways to go. I can see with a stock, un-shaven head, the Dvorak gasket could make things pretty snug. I don't think the belts stretch much if any. Perhaps the cogs may seat, but the nature of the belt is not to stretch.
