I have a 1995 3-cyl and the engine has been having problems. Most recently the cylinder head ate it when there was an oil delivery problem. After searching the local CL ads, I found a few engines from the early '90s models and I'm wondering if there's anything special I need to drop one into my '95 (ODB1 model). I may just wait for an entire car to pop up so I can have a parts car on standby but I thought I'd ask just incase I get impatient. Thanks. Also, has anyone used the larger-oil-return-passage head gaskets? I put one on during the last rebuild and I'm wondering if that might have caused the lack of oil on the top end. |

The 3 cylinder long block stayed the same from 89-01. What changed were the various sensors, oil pump (96 and later) and distributors. The trick is to keep the same mainfolds (intake and exhaust) and the same distributor with the original car. If you put an earlier block in a 96 and later car then you will also need to change the oil pump and oil pan to accomodate the crank sensor. I haven't had any trouble with the oil drain back holes. My last 2 refreshes were done with a Felpro gasket and both are still running strong. Good Luck! |

You've got your generations all wrong, but what you're asking will work. As idmetro said, block and head stayed the same from 89-00. GEN 1 (MK1) 85-88 GEN 2 (MK2) 89-91 GEN 2 (MK3) 92-94 GEN 3 (MK4) 95-97 GEN 3 (MK5) 98-01 |
