What have I done to my car now?!? Its blown a hole in my new air filter and I think it may have blown the cover off too (I had no butterfly nut holding it on at the time) It starts fine, but its not running smooth.

Maybe a little more info?? what were you doing to it before it "blew a hole...." what repairs or maintenance did you just complete before it did this. did it backfire and blow or did it blow off driving down the road Edited by Old Man, Feb 2 2013, 06:03 PM.

What I did before it blew a hole in the filter (or any of the following symptoms) was a compression test. The car has been coughing and "trying to stall" when leaving a stop, or while driving an incline. It takes more than a few minutes for these symptoms to lessen to where its not such a risk to be stopped at a light or sign, but they never quite go away. The incident where the filter was damaged and the cover unseated was a longer trip.(The last 60 miles of a 220 mile trip) Many times towards the end of that trip the car would lose power and I suppose backfire rapidly...Revving the engine while out of gear usually seems to help relieve these fits but in this instance it didn't seem to do anything. At the next exit I discovered the hole in the filter and that most of the clips holding the cover had been "adjusted" (since then I've gotten the butterfly nut for the cover) (also broke the hood release spring so I had to complete the journey without the hood closed completely (but that, I don't think, is related at all)) The car had an odbII warning about the catalytic converter (p0420) since I bought the car (about 9 months ago) and it now includes a p0302 (misfire cylinder 2) It may include more, I'm gonna go find out and have the thing reset. |

make sure all the plugs are cleaned adjusted and installed with the correct torque. insure all the plug wires are on the correct plug. clean any moisture from inside the distributor. check your timing, including checking the timing belt for being a tooth off. |

![]() This is what is causing your issue. #2 is not firing causing a build up of gas causing a backfire. ![]() Also why you have no power. Definitely check for moisture in the cap. Listen to Old Man ! Edited by Stiffchezze, Feb 2 2013, 09:18 PM.

one hell of a back fire through the intake was your issue..... have you ever been drinking something and before you could swallow you suddenly sneezed? same thing.....out your intake, through the air filter...and past the clamps. enjoy. |

Johnny Mullet just had a slipped timing belt throwing his engine out of time give him some issues blowing back thru the throttle body. You might recheck your timing belt and timing marks. |
