Just got back from a 1390 mile trip. before i left changed oil and filter put in small bottle of MMO and topped off with 5w30 synthetic oil. Checked plugs 3 days before, looked good. Drove 535 miles at 55 to 65 mph. Stop for gas 1 time. When i got there checked oil and was 3/4 qt. low. I know that MMO evaporates so was thinking thats what happen. Before i started bad i topped off with motor oil. Drove home same speed. When i got home checked oil and it was 3/4 qts low. There is no smoke that i can see while driving. It would pull most hills in 3rd gear, while increasing speed. Doesn't seem to be short on power. No leaks. It does have code P0420. The tail pipe is black smut. It is getting 42.3 mpg overall. It got 42.1 to 42.4 on flat ground with no traffic. While on I40 and in the mountain it got 44.3 to 44.8 with drafting and coasting. Compression is 180 to 195 across the board. Car has 179000 miles. Does this oil use seem normal? Thanks |

bad valve guides or bad valve stem seals...........seems very high, but not super high. lets see what others think? you may expect a burned valve in your future. (rubs his magic crystal geo ball) |

How much oil is in the air cleaner? How long have you had this car and has it used oil in the past? My 1.0 JDM engines uses no oil in 4000 miles. My 1.3 used 1 quart in 2600 miles and it is getting better. It had been abused and neglected by a previous owner. It used 2.5 quarts in the first 4000 mile interval. I hope this makes sense. |

Not too bad on the oil consumption, although you're going to want to think about some sort of repair or engine overhaul at some point in time. I always consider engine oil leaks as one of the main ways the engine departs the property. They might seem small, but they add up. For example, I took in a 1999 G10 engine on trade on an overhaul. The engine had nearly 200,000 miles on it at the time. The owner said it used a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. The exterior of the engine was coated in oily grunge. He had been using some sort of "very expensive" oil for the many thousands of miles he had had the car, and changing it every 2,000 miles. The inside of the engine was very clean. I replaced the valve cover gasket, the camshaft seal (blown out due to a PCV valve total blockage), the front and rear main crankshaft seals, the rear main seal housing gasket, the oil pump gasket, and resealed the oil pan. There are no more oil leaks, and the engine uses a quart of "very expensive" oil every 2,000 miles. I never put any MMO in the crankcase oil. I didn't put MMO in the cylinders to soak. My 1996 4 cylinder has used a quart of oil every 1,200 miles for the last 70,000 miles. It now has a minor leak on one of the seals on the front of the engine. The seal inside the distributor is leaking a few drips, also. It's not so bad that I'm going to fix it in the middle of the winter. One of these days, if and when the oil consumption becomes worse, maybe around a quart every 900 miles or so, I'm going to overhaul another engine to replace it. It only has 182,000 miles at this point in time. GG |

Check to make sure your PCV system isn't full of sludge and clogged. This is a cheap and easy fix. That could be causing the farts and oil usage. It could also be just about worn out like an old engine I had that oil farted along whatever route I took. Conor |

Internal engine wear, most likely. You can have good compression, and still use oil. How's the oil consumption for your daily operation? The same, or better? |

My Metro uses about the same amount of oil. As you describe, the compression is good, the plugs look clean, but the tail pipe has smut. I've checked the PVC valve and all passages. The air breather looks as clean as the day it drove off the lot. I get about 47-48 MPG on my daily drive of ~ 54 miles. I plan to drive it until it gets much worse, then overhaul. Just keep a good eye on the oil level and not let it get too low. |
