Distributor Shaft End Won't Go Back In; Replacing o-ring and can't reinsert distributor

Hopefully an easy one:

I went to install the Felpro 419 o-ring on my wife's 1995 Metro (was leaking oil)—rather than disassemble distributor, I simply undid the (2) T40 bolts on the housing mount. The distributor came right off at the block, I was able to pull it and replace the o-ring without incident.

But, I neglected Bad Bent's advice to take "care not to spin the end of the distributor". I now can't get the distributor shaft all the way in again.

Is there any trick or advice to doing this, such as opening and marking the distributor and spinning it to fit from that end? I tried creating a line-up mark on the edge by sticking a flathead screwdriver into the slot and marking the edge with oil, but no luck--it won't go in all the way. It's just the last 1/4-1/8" that's sticking out.

Thx!

Take the distributor cap off and spin the rotor around till the distributor will push back in. It will only go one way.

Yeah, it only goes on one way. If it doesn't slip in easily (as stated above) just take the cap off, rotate the rotor until it slips in all the way. You should feel it as it lines up. Easy though . . . it only takes a little force to turn the shaft.
